Ric Thompson: Kevin, because there are a number of different things that you are very well-known for, let’s kind of focus in on just the general area. Let’s say I’m an entrepreneur or I’m in selling and I’m just getting started. I haven’t really broken through yet.

Maybe I’m even a little bit stuck, like I said, at $30,000 to $35,000 a year. I’m not starving to death, but I am definitely not happy, and I’ve definitely got a lot more potential in front of me. What would you say? What are your thoughts on that?

Kevin Hogan: Let’s start out here: Imagine that you’re fairly new in business – maybe even five years in business – and you haven’t quite ‘made it’ yet. Why is this?

You’ve read all the books, even the ones that matter, like Think and Grow Rich. You’ve read the books and it’s still not happening. What is missing?

There are a million books that say, “Here’s what this successful person did, and here’s the model. You go and do this. You start a software company and you get on everybody’s computer in the world. If you can just get on everybody’s computer in the world and make them all give you a dollar, you’ll be a billionaire.”

Of course, this is true, right?

Then there’s Coca-Cola. You can sell everybody a bottle of Coke. You’re going to be wealthy and get people “hooked” on your product, and that’s a cool thing. Then you go out there and you try to sell your product, your idea, your patent, your trademark, or your invention and you do all the things exactly like the books say. It’s like you have it in your mind and you do all this stuff.

You work hard, you’re up all night, you’re sweating, and nothing happens. You think, “That can’t be possible because I did exactly what I was supposed to.”

What is “Success”?

For the sake of this interview only, let’s measure “success” in terms of dollars accumulated. Next go ’round we talk about love, happiness. I’m only measuring success today in terms of wealth, income that is collected for the accumulation of wealth purposes.

There are a lot of other things that are important to be successful at: being happy, having a great family, love, and all the things that we can’t measure so easily, but we can measure money. That’s a measurable commodity.

Are you familiar, Ric, with the books like Built to Last, Good to Great, and some of those titles? Do they sound familiar?

Ric Thompson: Absolutely, sure.

Kevin Hogan: That’s where I started researching your question. I started to read stuff like that. The good thing was that the books are actually a few years old, so I was reading these books about companies, what things these companies had in common, what made them great, and how they got there. An interesting thing happened; over the following three to four years those companies, after the books were published, turned out to actually not perform as well as the rest of the companies in the United States did.

They actually tended to under-perform. Here I had all these companies-including companies that had been great for 25 to 50 years, like GE, General Electric, Johnson & Johnson, Proctor & Gamble, tons of companies – and all of a sudden they under-perform. They had all the attributes of being excellent and amazing. They were doing everything right, and then everything went to heck.

Why? Why is it that these companies are now actually showing losses on their statements? What is going on here?

And this is the crux of your question, because companies are made of people.

How important are random events in success?

Square one? It turns out there is some randomness involved.

You can actually go to the dice table in Vegas, throw seven passes in a row, and “believe” you’re doing really well, that you’re amazing all by yourself.

The fact is that the eighth roll could just as easily be a loser as it is a winner.

The incredibly important question to ask is,

“Do you have all your money on that bet, or did you have a small percentage?”

Realize there’s some randomness in life. That’s a really good thing to know. Here, I’ll recommend somebody else’s book because I want you to learn about the things that go wrong in life. It’s a really important thing to know. There is The Black Swan by Nicholas Taleb.

Pick up that book; that’s a really cool book. It sort of gives you cause to understand that you aren’t in total control of everything. When you do everything right, there’s still stuff that can go wrong. That’s number one.

Number two is that just because you have somebody’s success formula doesn’t mean you’ve got their recipe for success. I don’t know if you’ve had this experience, but my mom made a couple of great dishes when I was a kid.

She used to make this great potato salad; it had this right flavor, mustardy and all that. It was perfect. It was the perfect food. She would tell other people how to make it. It’s not like mom held anything back, but it didn’t taste the same when anybody else made it.

The fact is that it tasted downright bad sometimes with almost the same exact recipe, if not the what APPEARS TO BE THE exact same recipe. How can that be?

The short and first answer is that food tastes different cooked in a microwave vs. on the stove vs. on the grill. Same exact recipe, very, very different taste, and perhaps very different nutritional value as well.

We leave the metaphor…

What Don’t You Want?

The deal is that we always talk about the things that we want in life, “I want to be successful,”; “I want to be earning $100,000 a year,”; and “I want to be helping 500 people a month.” If you’re in relationships, “I want a gal, and I want her to be really pretty, sweet, nice, and not yell at me,” and all those good things.

We have all these things, but we don’t specifically itemize the things that we don’t want to happen.

Seems kind of silly.

Except it’s not.

What the books all miss and what the gurus miss when they’re communicating is they’re telling stories from their perspective of what they did to succeed, all of which are legitimately cool and valuable things. They’re neglecting to say the things that you should not do, the mistakes that they avoided or overcame and those kinds of things.

In other words, what things don’t you want to have happen in your business? Those are actually some of the things that cause you to be really successful.

If there are ladies listening, here you go. Imagine, ladies, that you’re saying, “I want the perfect husband. I want somebody who’s funny and happy and somebody who’s strong and good looking.”

Great! There’s your model. Now that same guy could be a terrible father. He could be completely unkind in many other ways to your children or maybe your relatives.

You didn’t say you wanted him to be kind to your relatives; you only said you wanted him to be nice, seemingly to you as if that would generalize to the world.

There are all kinds of other terrible things that this person will do in life, and this is what happens in everyday life. We don’t itemize the things that we don’t want to happen.

We don’t create ways to get over the obstacles that are going to come up in life, so what happens is people accidentally get out of a success path.

It’s very easy to do this in any business: real estate, investing, anything. They fall apart and they don’t succeed because they don’t know what they don’t want.

If you live on the Gulf coast or in Florida, you don’t want a hurricane to come by and destroy your home, so you buy hurricane or some kind catastrophe insurance. If you don’t, you have recognized what you don’t want, but have failed to act upon that driver, either by insuring against it financially or leaving the physical area.

So the next question becomes, how do you know what you don’t want? We’ll go back to the relationship for just a second. The woman doesn’t want somebody who’s going to hit her, right? Does that make sense?

Ric Thompson: Yes, I’d say so.

Kevin Hogan: Fair? Yet we know that with one out of 20 that happens. The woman doesn’t want somebody who’s going to hit her children, let’s say. Let’s go there. All of a sudden a door opens in your mind, “…didn’t think of that…”

She would like somebody who actually has proven income potential, not like he just got out of college and he could get a really good job; he’s really smart.

That’s nice, but does he have proven income potential? Does this person have a track record of bringing in $50,000 or $100,000 a year?

This would’ve saved a lot of problems along the way, too. As people look at the downside, the drawbacks, and things that can go wrong in life and they find out ways to solve those problems ahead of time, then it’s much easier to build wealth and cause success in whatever area you choose.

Discouragement Leads to Failure

Otherwise, what happens is we get discouraged.

People tend to get discouraged.

I talk to people all over the world, and they say, “I started this business, and I read Think and Grow Rich,” as an example.

And, I’m not picking on Napoleon Hill. That book was so huge. I must have read that thing I can’t even tell you how many times, maybe 100 to 150 times that it went in my mind.

Then The Law of Success, that other beautiful book that he wrote. Without that, I don’t know if I would’ve had the motivation early on to go through those discouraging things.

The fact is that most people, when they get discouraged, inertia sets in and they tend to not continue to work as hard, to do as much, to achieve the goal, to go for the goal.

Expect Discouragement and Push On to Success

You want people to know that a lot of stuff can and will go wrong, and we call this Outcome-based Thinking. This turned out to be one of the core factors of success.

Outcome-based thinking works like this:

What is it that you want?

Oh, write this down. I’m making a little squiggly line with my hand here, which means it’s profound, but you probably can’t see that. While you’re driving, remember to write this down.

  1. What is it that you want, specifically? 
  2. What are the things you don’t want in this business? What don’t you want to happen? 
  3. What are the obstacles that are going to happen along the way?Then one of my favorite phrases is ‘what else?’

    When you think of obstacles that could be along the way, we might have insurance problems. What else? We could have lawsuits.

    What else? You just list all of the possible things that can go wrong in this business.

    Feel free to get fantastic and wild in what can go wrong.

    These are the ‘black swans’. Earthquakes happen. Weird things happen in people’s lives. Write down all of those things. Now you think, “I’m prepared now.”

    Now you have to create the map, and a real map has obstacles that are overcome.

Really.

The article was written by a staff journalist. Superb writer. Articulate. Makes a good argument. And he could easily be earning 10 times what his paper pays him…easily. Sorry my friend, that was your choice.

Not only is there no reason that you can’t be “overpaid,” I’d be surprised if anything else was the result.

You don’t have to be a dynamite speaker to earn $100,000 per year speaking. You don’t have to have a college degree and you definitely don’t need a decade of experience.

I got paid $500 for my first paid public presentation. Now that may not sound like a lot to you, but this was 1987 when $500…was about twice what it is today. I was 25.

Two years before that presentation, I earned $14,140 as a restaurant manager that worked 54.90 hours per week. (Do the math.) I was not a good manager. To my credit, I was a customer-service-junkie manager. I wanted every customer served at light speed and with the best we had. But I didn’t care if the paperwork was up to date…didn’t care if the drawers added up perfectly at the end of the night. They were always close enough. (If they weren’t I put in my own money and found how the cash disappeared later…) Didn’t care if the coupons were all entered into the registers. I just was not a bookkeeping kind of guy.

I didn’t mind paying lazy employees minimum wage and good employees twice that. But the restaurant did. Employees needed to be paid roughly the same amount of money….How stupid was that?! Lose your best employees to the first real job they find…and I’m stuck with what’s left. I shared that with the regional people. They didn’t like my non-conformist attitude. I confess that I never read “the company handbook.”

That got me into more than occasional trouble. I didn’t know you couldn’t help people with their family problems at home, compliment the lady on how nice she looked that day, tell the guy to get his backside in gear, or bet on the Vikings. I managed “by Mom.” I managed the store like my Mom would have. (And by the way…we were substantially profitable that year over and above the previous year even with bad weather at the holidays!)

I didn’t get fired from THIS job. But I should have. I hated the rules…well I would have if I would have read them. The Regional Manager kept reminding me of the rules. I would almost get ill when I would be lectured about “the rules and policies”. Policy always sounded like Police to me….

It just wasn’t for me. I quit before finding more ways to get “fired.” (No one was “downsized” in those days.)

I wanted to do something FUN, EXCITING, and something I LIKED. My two co-managers LOVED their work. The place was a perfect fit for them…but not me. I was a square peg and had no intentions of getting any more shaved off on the sides to “make me fit.”

Napoleon Hill sat by my bed every night. (Think and Grow Rich, that is.) I was going to do him proud….

Moving from the point of being a speaker who wanted to “get good,” to a professional was a pretty big step for me. I was going to ask for $500….

I was REALLY young. Why would anyone PAY ME to talk to them?

And once I decided to actually answer that question…

It was 1987 at Moreland Elementary School. I talked to the 400 kids packed into the gymnasium about drug and alcohol use. The good. The bad. The ugly. I was scared to death (almost literally, as I suffered from severe panic disorder in 1987…I had panic attacks 3-6 times per week…they were random…I never knew when they would come.).

I was 25 years old and my life dream was now officially on day one. I didn’t do it alone. I asked for help and I had help. I had a friend helping me. Someone who was as dedicated not to my dream but the message we wanted to share. In fact, there were 2 or 3 people like that. None of us got rich. We weren’t in that frame of mind. We shared a powerful message to people who wanted to hear it…and a lot that didn’t. Later letters and testimonials would show lives saved, endless appreciation, recommendations to other schools and organizations.

Two years later I spoke to South St. Paul High School. $1000. I had an enormous audience of students, teachers, parents. The place was packed. Same subject. But media covered this one. We came up with a neat angle that tied us into a national campaign. That was a very, very good thing because it was the beginning of the next level…

In fact most of my early presentations were all $500-$1,000 per day (several presentations per day at each school). They were in front of schools…kids…the toughest audiences on the planet…and I survived to tell about it!

I don’t have detailed records (what a surprise)… but I did about 15 schools per year for four years. I made more money in those 15 days than I did the entire year in 1986.

I made the audience members’ adrenaline pump. I was unconventional. I did a lot of things most speakers would never do in front of an audience. I was not politically correct. My lack of judgment in content often got me a few scowls but, by-and-large, they liked the 25 year old…

I worked hard to get the dates…next to no one knows how to go from anonymous to known quickly…and I was no exception. I had to learn the hard way. But I learned.

I learned how to get paid even when they didn’t have ANY MONEY. I learned how to get paid and my audience was children, which meant ZERO back of room. I learned how to get paid when there was literally no budget, no allotment, no nothing. Each month went by and I learned another secret. Another insider idea that would pay off over and over again. The kind of stuff no one on the outside would ever think about…which is why they were on the outside and I was in the jungle on safari!

Today…things have moved along nicely. I have been invited to speak literally from London to Australia. It took me an enormous amount of time to learn how to move from level to level. 500 to 1000. 1000 to 1500. 1500 to 2000. 2000 to 4000. 4000 to 5000. 5000 to 10,000.

But the hardest leaps were the early leaps. Constantly having to justify how I could be worth 1000.00 for one day…

And that’s what I want to help you do.

There IS a cap so don’t think you will make 100,000,000 just from speaking. You won’t! You simply get paid more than all of your friends and peers and most everyone else…a lot more.)

  • How to get nonprofit organizations to pay you when everyone else is speaking for free.
  • How to get THOUSANDS of dollars from nonprofit and charitable organizations that do not have “ONE CENT” to pay your fee… (I lived on this secret for three years!)

I will analyze up to 30 minutes of a presentation that I approve for you.  I’ll give you point by point feedback as if I was in the room with you.
There’s a great deal of written work in creating various messages (marketing, manuals, PR, press releases) that you will use to represent yourself to the people you want to hire you. I will line by line each piece of work for you.
Every piece of getting paid what you are worth is included and detailed.

The course works like this.

10 people participate (I’d work with 50 if I had the time, desire and energy…it’s not that “space is limited”…it’s not…it’s an E-Course.)

Each week, you receive your lesson for the week. One week it’s a video tape that will arrive in your mailbox. The next week it’s densely packed information and crucial data you get by email. The next week it’s YOU making a video and sending it to me to FIX. Not only will I show you how to present so they WANT YOU BACK, I’ll show you what to do to become a truly SUPERB speaker so they will be talking about you the next day!

Yes. I’m going to show you how I create and develop presentations so that you can literally talk for DAYS and not cover the same story or material twice…all without a script.

This program not only shows you how to make money but…if you choose… how to become one of the best!

Crucial: In order to get feedback on the week’s assignment you MUST get your homework to me by the end of the week. I won’t play catch up with anyone. It’s your life, not mine….and it’s MY LIFE, not yours. I’m dedicated to you, you dedicate to me. If we have corresponded or talked in the past…this is who I prefer to work with. But even if we haven’t as long as you have integrity (total integrity) and a strong desire to succeed, you can participate.

I retain the right to turn down any application for any reason prior to the beginning of the course. After the start of the course, we are stuck with each other!
