The Power of a Victoria’s Secret Bag

Why is it that some (but not all) women at the mall feel more glamorous, good looking and feminine simply by toting around a Victoria’s Secret bag instead of a similar pink bag?

They didn’t even use a product. They simply carried around a bag.

Women who carried around a plain pink bag reported nothing out of the ordinary.

The Victoria’s Secret bag, however, had magic in it.

But the magic is not necessarily intuitive.

Most marketers, salespeople and advertisers guess. They follow their intuition and hope it leads them to the right answer. And that strategy doesn’t work very well…

Influence with Precision

Minnesota Researchers found that a single specific type of woman reported feeling more glamorous and even better looking after an hour with the Victoria’s Secret bag in contrast to a similar generic pink bag.

Perhaps it’s because they are glamorous or good looking, and carrying the bag enhances that?

Perhaps the reason is because they don’t feel good looking or feminine, and carrying the bag gives them more self confidence?

These are two plausible reasons that come to mind as to why carrying around a Victoria’s Secret bag would make someone feel sexier. But the fact is that neither is necessarily accurate.

Victoria’s Secret marketing and advertising people need to know a lot more about women than simple speculations, guesses and opinions. They need to know what really influences women and find out why not all women are impacted equally. This way advertisers can come up with effective marketing and advertising campaigns targeted toward specific “types of women.”

What is the answer?

Women who believe that their personality is not fixed but can change, are not influenced by carrying the Victoria’s Secret bag. They report no impact from carrying the bag.

However, those who believe that they are not able to change themselves, i.e. “they are who they are,” feel more glamorous and attractive when carrying the bag.

The Victoria’s Secret bag, instead of a generic pink bag, causes the fixed mindset woman to feel sexier because the Victoria’s Secret bag acts as a trigger to her non-conscious, and as a signal to the general public.

Signaling generally revolves around the concept of Successful Sexual Reproduction though we’ll save that discussion for next week.

Victoria's Secret Influences Women and Men The bag has rubbed its magical power on to a specific group of women who carry the bag, and in another conversation on another day would tell you that they know they can’t change who they are.

Remember that, because about half of your clients fall into this category of people. Half of the people you communicate are changed by tangible things on the outside but not by conscious thought on the inside….

Brand Influence

The same researchers went on to test the power of the influence of brand characteristics on another group of people. I’ll lay that out for you in a moment.

Victoria's Secret Influences Women You probably have already figured out that you, yourself, are a brand. People who know you have come to ascribe specific traits to you. Companies often are well branded in such a way that the general public perceives the company’s brand to have a specific set of traits. The idea is that the individual uses the product, then acquires those traits through contagion.

I think of Apple Computers as a creative, superior and intelligent brand. Perhaps a bit arrogant.

You could speculate that people who do not believe that they can change their personality or intelligence might benefit greatly from using a computer that is branded as creative, superior and intelligent and you might be right.

Giving hundreds of people an Apple Computer to use in an experiment is rather difficult, so a simpler form of influence was introduced to a group of MBA students at the University of Minnesota.

MIT sounds like something you catch a baseball with if you aren’t a graduate student at University. But at University, you know that MIT stands for hardworking intelligent leaders. That is the MIT brand. And students were given a pen with the MIT logo to use for 6 weeks.

What happened at the end of the 6 weeks?

For those students who believed they can change and that they have flexible intelligence capabilities?

For those students who believed “they are who they are” and they aren’t ever going to change?

They believed themselves to be more hardworking, more of a leader and more intelligent.

Precision Brand Marketing

Then, the researchers constructed a brilliant experiment where students were given either an article about how people can change or an article about how they don’t change. They then were given either a Victoria’s Secret shopping bag or a pink bag to do a treasure hunt with at the University.

Those who read the article noting that people can change?

It didn’t matter whether they carried a Victoria’s Secret bag or not. There was no magic in either bag.

People who don’t believe they can change are likely to be strongly attracted to brands because of the desirable attributes the brand signals to the individual and also to the those who see the individual using the brand.

Meanwhile, people who believe they can change certainly might purchase branded products but the magic of the brand to enhance self perception of the key traits of the brand simply doesn’t “work” on those who know they are able to improve the self.

Put Yourself to the Test

Confessional Moment: I recently put myself to a test.

“When do I use brands to “impress” or signal to others.”

I rarely go out to eat while home, so I experience no signaling behavior there.

I collect jewelry owned by Elvis Presley, autographs of well known celebrities, but I don’t wear the diamond rings or necklaces I collect. No one sees them except me. (Now that is kind of ridiculous now that I ponder that.)

I drive a vehicle that I purchased when the previous administration enacted a tax benefit for buying a vehicle greater than 6000 pounds. Otherwise I never would have bought an SUV to save my soul…but to get the tax break? I’m a proud owner of a Toyota Sequoia.

Who am I signaling?…

I wear my Hugo Boss jacket when I fly because I don’t want the flight attendant to see a label that says ‘Target’ (or whatever the jacket I used to wear on the plane says…I don’t know because I don’t want anyone to see it!)

There it is.

Victoria's Secret Influence Factors that work I need to signal the flight attendant that I am a savvy, smart dresser and the inside of that jacket which goes immediately into the jacket hold on boarding is seen ONLY by the flight attendant who takes my coat and retrieves it at the end of the flight. That one woman. That’s it. I have no idea when I leave town if she will be beautiful or plain, but my non-conscious mind is telling me to signal to her that I am fashionably savvy.

And now that I think about it, I am “self-conscious” about it. I really don’t want the gal to see “Made in Indonesia” or whatever I would prefer to wear onto the plane.

Go figure. The non-conscious part of my brain is compelled to signal status and prestige to a flight attendant.

Not to my doctor, a nurse, a therapist, an audience, a maid, a housekeeper, a hotel front desk employee, my neighbors…there must be SOMEONE else out there in the world I’m trying to signal, and I’ll let you know, but between now and then, just know that my non-conscious mind must have something plotted for a flight attendant…I’ll keep you posted…

I never really thought about it until now. I’ll go back to experimenting on other people. Much less vulnerability involved!

Continuously Influenced by Magic Brands

Most people have numerous brands from which they receive magic, the transference of specific brand traits from the brand to the person, because they believe themselves unchangeable at least in certain ways.

In other words, if I want to appear and feel more creative, I should bring the Mac I gave to my son, with me on the plane. If I want to look and feel more intelligent I could bring an MIT pen.

Typically, I bring something to read that will polarize the person sitting next to me so they don’t engage me in conversation…

Advertisers have created specific strategies for imbuing specific traits for the brand they are selling into your brain as desirable.

Victoria’s Secret commercials and advertising often use powerful imagery of women walking the runway while wearing lingerie and angel wings. Everyone knows that there’s lots of men and women watching those beautiful models walking the runway. It would only make sense that a lot of women will either think consciously or non-consciously something like, “I gotta get that.”

Hypothetically, the brain sees the lingerie being worn by her own Self and this probably causes that glamorous feeling to increase.

Is this only a signal to the Self?

Before I show you the videos, let’s get this figured out.

Most people will not see the woman who buys Victoria’s Secret actually wearing the lingerie.

Most people will not be aware that she is wearing Victoria’s Secret lingerie. But somewhere in that brain is there a story line that has someone seeing her in the lingerie that night?

After all what is the alternative?

If she finds herself in the position of not wearing Victoria’s Secret and the moment happened to come along where she needed that glamour, femininity, and enhancement to her physical appearance, she’d certainly want to be ready. If she got to that moment and was caught wearing drab boring Wal Mart underwear what would that do to how she felt about herself?

One thing is certain, the closer to naked you get, the more difficult it is to cloak reality.

I suspect that story line is running and I suspect that understanding that this is one story line about how the evening might go is part of what makes Victoria’s Secret such a powerful brand.

Don’t misunderstand, the story line is not necessarily a goal. It’s something that could transpire. The lingerie is simply being prepared for what might transpire.

And before we leave Victoria’s Secret, consider the most recent hypnotizing commercial.

First, watch it for the 30 seconds of bliss. Then go back after you read my comments on the next page and analyze the video.

Take a deep breath…

Watch and be Hypnotized…

3, then 5 stunning models walking down a hall.

There is a row of plush chairs on either side of the hall, but no one is sitting in the chairs. Your brain will fill that in as you watch.

The driving drum beat captivates any attention not already gained. “5 Ways to be Incredible” flashes on the screen. The first time I saw the commercial, I knew I had to do further research as the message to me was simply that there are 5 ways to be incredible and they are being in the presence of these 5 specific girls. A man can do nothing but appreciate the close up streaming video of beauty and busts simply as a gift to me. There is no way I could see beyond that. That’s hypnosis.

But to the woman watching the commercial, she sees what I don’t notice or understand. There are 5 different kinds of bras here. One of them is called a front close demi. Another is the front close push up. These things I understand, but have no identification with the need for the information.

And there is more that I don’t “see” on the first take of the commercial. I don’t see the models walking into the scene from what appears to be an elevator.

They boldly, intensely walk forward. They own the room. They could have been shy, reserved, sweet, gentle. That’s not these girls. They are intense. They would walk right over anyone standing in their way. They are wearing nothing but underwear and are in control of the room.

KEY QUESTION: How would you feel and behave if you walked off an elevator wearing nothing but your underwear?

Is there ANY situation where you would feel more uncomfortable wearing nothing but underwear than the hotel lobby? And how would YOU come off the elevator? What would your state of mind be?

Me too…

But not those who wear Victoria’s Secret…

Would you be in control of the room? Would you be the power broker?

That super hero strength is part of what the woman who wears Victoria’s Secret gets from wearing Victoria’s Secret. And they want their partner to know and sense that.

Most men or women walking off the elevator in their underwear are having the nightmare of their life.

Can you imagine wearing something that would take your worst nightmare and turn it into your most desired dream?

Victoria’s Secret boldly goes where no man has gone before. They recreate woman in their own image and it all works if you are wearing one of the 5 Ways to Be Incredible.

In 2010, VS offered a brilliant commercial that was just as hypnotic with a command: “Give your angel a Christmas You’ll never forget.”

The woman watching the commercial knows she’s your angel and now is certain that you (assuming you are her male counterpart) consider her in the same way you considered the angels in the commercial. These angels were given gifts by their guy.


Get it, dummy?

Victoria’s Secret is a master of not only brand identification, but also permission.

As a man, in the presence of women, I need permission to stare and I just was given that permission to stare because I was being ordered to buy what these angels are wearing and give it to my angel. How else would a dumb guy like me know what to buy my angel? If I don’t watch, I’ll never learn.

Victoria’s Secret is telling the woman that you must let your guy observe this so he appreciates his woman…angel.

And who could argue?

But you work for the government, sell insurance, want to get the best deal in your next negotiation and want to persuade the girl to go out with you.

What does Victoria’s Secret have to do with any of these things?

It’s a fair question after being spellbound by such a commercial. This is cool and I lay it out step by step for you!

Here is what you will do…

The lesson is that: YOU bring attributes to the people who you work for and the other people you are with.

You transfer brand traits to the girl you want to go out with you.

Construct An Influence Plan

Do you have a plan as well-constructed as the Victoria’s Secret commercials?

The precise strategy Victoria’s Secret uses is the strategy YOU must use as an individual, entrepreneur, salesperson or marketer.

You are a brand. People who know you have three words to describe you. Perhaps they are feminine, glamorous and good looking. Perhaps they are smart, a leader and elite. They aren’t want you want them to be at this moment – those words are your brand image that you have developed for the last decade or two.

So when you walk down the hallway with someone, people who observe you walking with the guy or girl next to you take your brand image and transfer it to the innocent guy or girl. That guy or girl is signaling a message to everyone who can see her. That message is changed by walking next to you because she collects your traits, desirable or not.

Do this: Write down 5 – 10 keywords or keyword phrases that other people use to describe you, your look, or your personality. If you are blisteringly hot in physical appearance, write that down. It is part of your brand. It’s what stands out to the world.

You might be branded by the world as being sweet, kind, loving, caring, hateful, evil, psychotic, hot, beautiful, genius, sexy, good looking, plain, boring, fat, gross, disgusting, unpleasant, rude, generous, empathetic, gentle, brash, uncouth…Write the 5 – 10 words that you think people would write down if they were going to rapidly describe you.

That is your current brand messaging, for better or worse.

Next I want you to write down the 5 – 10 words that you want people to use to describe you when they are talking about you.

Now write down a detailed plan as thorough as what the director of the Victoria’s Secret commercials does. The plan is what you will now do to cause people to see you in the second image vs. the first.

Think of it this way:

“Why does someone want to come up to you and have a picture taken with you that they will then put up on their Facebook page?”

If you do not have what they need, and they DO have what you need, what are you going to do to acquire that?

And do it!

Every day I look at beautiful websites designed by creative geniuses that do absolutely nothing in net profits. (notice that word “NET”)

And I see websites that I can instantly tell you are making money. They look like they were designed by one of my kids….which is one of the ways you know….they will do well.

There are lots of great books and DVD’s and CD’s about making money on the internet and to date I have yet to see a comprehensive package.

For example:

There are lots of programs that show you how to build a website. (This is no longer complicated. I’ll show you how to build a website by typing as if you were typing any other document on your computer.)

Problem is having a website does you nothing if you have nothing to sell…or if you don’t know how to write in such a way that it compels your reader to trust you and buy from you….or if you don’t know how to GET PEOPLE TO YOUR WEBSITE…or if you ….get the idea?

There are lots of programs that address any part of the factors in building wealth on the web. I own a bunch and I’ve learned a lot over the years. But NO ONE has put together the COMPREHENSIVE PROGRAM.

And of course when my mentor says, “Kevin, you need to put an E-Course out there that shows people how to do EVERYTHING involved in making a successful web business. Not just one aspect….and it has to be simple, fast and really work.”

And even I felt overwhelmed…. and it takes a lot to get me overwhelmed.

But because all of this is fun and there is actually no part of making money on the web that can’t be done by literally anyone with a 5th grade education…then it should be relatively do-able….

And it turned out it was.

If you think of a sport like football, basketball or baseball….you know that if you take out any one player…and play one man short….you are going to get creamed.

And that’s ultimately what web marketing comes down to.

There are lots of nuances that the experts and internet marketing scientists figure out and I LOVE to learn that stuff. BUT the fact is that the big pieces of the pie are far more important than the nuances in this game.

Kevin Hogan on Internet Marketing Business In fact, you can be an expert at say, getting traffic to your site…but if you have stuff that no one will look at for whatever reason…you make zero dollars. I don’t care if you can double that traffic. It doesn’t matter.

You MUST have ALL the pieces in place before you even CONSIDER working on the nuances.

As I look back at what I’ve accomplished on the Web, I know that it wasn’t the awesome website or the beautifully packaged program or the powerful search engine optimization (and yes, you want to evolve beyond basics) BUT it was having ALL the pieces in place… all the pieces of the puzzle operating competently that caused millions of dollars of business.

Everyday I learn something new but those things alone would never have gotten me where I am.

That required putting together a SYSTEM. And people need systems.

In this program I’ll take you to my original website. It wasn’t KevinHogan DOT com back in those days.

I’m going to show you exactly why good things happened. THE SYSTEM was in place. The technology was terrible, the design was not impressive, the programs had inexpensive designs.

THE SYSTEM was in place.

And what I’ve done is modeled what I’ve done and put it out there for you.

I’ve helped a number of other people put their business into the system. They seem to have done alright. Many have far outperformed what I’ve done. (Not even a question actually….)

I want you to LEARN THE SYSTEM.

THEN go and learn all the nuances and stay current in what is working in copywriting, promotional content, search engine optimization nuances.

THE SYSTEM: If you work the system it’s likely you will do six figures annually. How many of those six figures you do is up to you.

Effort IS required because it is a competitive arena.

The only time I will get into nuances is when they are SIGNIFICANT to your SUCCESS.

These relationships are mutually profitable. I have an affiliate (an affiliate is someone who sends me customers and I pay him to do so) in Romania. The funny thing is that even though he’s in Romania, most of the business he sends my way is from here in the United States.

That’s what makes the web cool. Someone can make M in Romania by having someone click on a link on his website and buying a program at mine. That kind of capitalism continues to change the world.

There are no borders. Your world doesn’t know prejudice.

It’s pretty nice for people to wait until you put out your next program and then when they do, they swoosh down and get it because they know it’s going to be even better than what you did before.

I’m grateful and appreciative, and so are they.

Hey go look at a website…any website that sells stuff.

Look for a testimonial that is signed “Cindy W.” or “John L.”

They aren’t real. I mean….Cindy W. doesn’t exist. Neither does John.
