It is absolutely mesmerizing.
It’s the most feared form of mind control.
It could be something as simple as the idea that messages played backwards on a record album could have influenced people to kill themselves.
The hit show “Love,” at the Mirage in Las Vegas is 100% Beatles and there is one “new song” in the show. It’s Nus GniK.
That’s Sun King…backward. It’s also interesting that the “song” sounds quite mellow and rather pop-ish cool!
But does this mean that the lyrics of Nus GniK played…well…as they were played in 1968 do anything to anyone?
What about those ice cubes in the glass from that old ad where you could see a woman or a phallic symbol if you looked closely enough. Certainly that’s covert hypnosis?
Did that make anyone buy the alcohol?
Is there something YOU can be doing that would be out of the awareness of someone that would dramatically influence them to the point they would kill themselves or engage in activity with someone of the opposite sex?
What about something as simple as buying products or services from you instead of your competitor?
What about those audio subliminal tapes I bought when I was in college? Pathways to Prosperity and similar by that then-famous guru who I can’t remember the name of now… or even Tony’s subliminals with the hypnotic stylization layered over the tracks. Did they work?
And what of the controversial new video technology where subliminals are being generated on computer screens and televisions. What’s possible there; and can it really be replicated?
Ice cubes? Invisible women? Audio? Video?
OK, let’s start answering the questions and let me show you SPECIFICALLY what to do and what you CAN do with ease to subliminally influence others and use covert hypnosis….and what you can save your time on because it doesn’t work?
What really works?…
Subliminal means “out of awareness and/or ‘below’ the threshold of conscious awareness.”
We could get scientific-picky, but that’s good for today.
There are two ways that marketers and researchers have attempted to use subliminal persuasion (outside of awareness…covert).
One has never worked and is completely bogus. The other has remarkable potential for just about every encounter for persuasion.
But we’re not going to stick with dictionary definitions alone. I want to show you whether those old records made you smoke pot or not….and similar all time curiosities…
Let’s start here:
Audio “Subliminal” Messages
Let’s start with the most controversial case I can recall.
It was 20 years ago today that Sergeant Pepper taught…. Judas Priest (yes it was the Beatles that started backmasking). to play subliminal messages.
Ah…Judas Priest…I didn’t do that kind of music. It bothered me.
It takes no rocket scientist to know that (lyrics) words not resisted and easily accepted can impact behavior, psyche, and a person’s “goodness.”
I know a few of my readers liked the genre and group. I passed….
Two teenage boys enacted a suicide pact, and one survived. But the song was “Better By You, Better Than Me,” or SOMETHING like that and supposedly when played backward you could hear “Do it” (think suicide). That was the argument in the lawsuit 20 years ago.
Now before we get into whether or not it was Judas Priest that caused the kid to put a gun to his head and….pull the trigger….
If I take the claimed reversed lyrics: “Do it” and write it backwards…so it’s back to forward…. “phoentically” I get:
A nonsense word.
In other words, if you were stoned, you could hear anything you wanted to hear…..but the fact is that the sounds don’t match up.
No big surprise here.

How did the judge rule? Was he right?…
The judge ruled the case dismissed. Zero evidence.
My take: You could listen to the music as it is and that might cause me to take a gun to my head…..
…as one of their “musicians” said at the time, “we would have backmasked ‘buy our records, buy our records, buy our records,” (My paraphrase, it’s been awhile.)
Yes, the judge was right.
There were other cases where rock groups would intentionally track words or musical clips backward.
It was a cool use of technology that was popular for 10 years and then as records became less used and tapes became the thing, the fad died out.
The hidden subliminal messages only worked with records because you could actually play them backward….but audio tapes and cd’s….well the fad died out….
No…of course it didn’t “work.”
And the impact of similar attempts intentional or not?
Not a dribble of evidence to show anything like that would impact anyone, in any way, ever.
End of that story.
But of course backward masking on music, intentionally done or not, was not the only way a message COULD be subliminal.
The message could be “recorded,” so softly and then tracked onto the song that you couldn’t “hear” it but you would ACT on it..
Could THAT work?
Listening to audiotapes that purport to have subliminal messages on them have become an obvious not so subliminal joke on the consumer.
Not one tape or program anywhere…not one research study… anywhere at any time… has been able to show results “above the placebo response.”
What’s that mean?
Greenwald, Pratakanis, et al did a remarkable study where they had people listen to one of two tapes.
One, they told participants, was designed to improve memory. The other, they told other participants, was designed to increase self-esteem.
There was no subliminal message on either tape in this study. (There isn’t on any of them in this study or for sale…it turns out.)
The label of the tapes were randomly assigned to the cassettes which all had the same music on them. One label indicated the tape would help improve memory. The other tape had a label that said it would raise self-esteem.
The experimenters told the groups examples of what they would…not …hear on the tapes. “I feel fantastic today.”
Results of the study?…
The individuals receiving the tapes with the label that said it would improve their memory…did indeed help their memory…and those tapes with the label that said it would raise their self esteem did raise their self esteem.
The placebo effect.
And there is nothing wrong with the placebo effect. It’s a good thing.
Subliminal audios may have messages “on them” but they aren’t heard and they aren’t processed in the auditory system….
They don’t change attitudes or behavior.
But… they do change credit card balances….
….but then there is video…and this is where things get scary….
There is a silent revolution happening.
