Seek out the company of & direction from those who are SUCCESSFUL at collecting and RETAINING WEALTH over time and have picture perfect self discipline.
a) You need to be in the presence of successful, self disciplined people.
b) You must be guided by someone dedicated to your success and self control.
I’ll show you how to get moving on this in a moment.
I want to start with money related outcomes because they are unambiguous, crystal clear and easy to measure.
Obviously you also want better relationships, better health. We will go there as well. Let’s simply begin with dollars.
NBA and NFL players: Highest paid athletes in the world. They earn from $1,000,000 – $50,000,000 PER YEAR from salary and endorsements.
2/3 of these pro athletes go bankrupt or broke.
You MUST learn to NOT do what these athletes consistently do with their money.
These men are disciplined in practice and on the field. They work incredibly hard at their profession. They are focused. They know how to stick with a successful regime.
Then they go broke. Predictably.
HOW is that possible?
Because they are personally skilled AND have a ROCK SOLID, KICK butt COACH at the stadium.
The top athlete has superior skills and talent. The top coach has superior skills at capturing contexts and creating successful outcomes for their athletes.
You’ve already seen articles in other publications about how to succeed in 2017. I personally read 3 articles that informed readers sent. I scanned a dozen more emails from friends/fans.
Every single article contained information that will cause failure for the readers. No kidding. Not one writer got it right. In fact, none came close by offering strategies that will matter to any significant degree.

If you read most self help authors/trainers/coaches and even psychologists tell you about living a successful life…you WILL fail so you might as well STOP before you begin.
Don’t believe it?
Most of these people use bizarre goal setting programs based on antiquated thinking that simply doesn’t work. So how do you know if you have a good coach…because a GREAT coach is GOLD.
10 years ago I’d simply have suggested you talk with a number of prospective coaches and pick one. That won’t work in 2017. There’s a coach on every street corner. Most of them are terrible. A few are good. How can you QUICKLY assess a possible coach??
You could ask for a NET WORTH statement before you ask to be coached. This can be a bit invasive, so at least do this:
At a minimum anyone you listen to for life and financial matters should have their living space paid in full and be debt free. PERIOD. This info is easily available online.
Then ask to see their CREDIT [FICO] SCORE. If you’re going to spill your guts or put your financial direction in the advice of someone else, their credit score should be at LEAST 750. The FICO score isn’t a perfect predictor of trust behavior, but it’s as close as you are going to get in this lifetime.
[The defect of the credit score is that it predicts behavior this month better than it does behavior in 5 years. The reason it’s not as perfect at predicting the future is that when you live with someone else their score is dramatically influenced by yours. So your careful and meticulous thinking and pristine behavior has a profound impact on your partners score and vice versa.]
So it’s not a perfect tool. It’s simply my personal favorite tool because when I see a credit score I know what question to ask next. Obviously my helping people become self disciplined, self regulated and self responsible is one of the 7 METAKEYS to SUCCESS.
If their FICO Score is over 750 they are more likely to arrive at work on time. They are more likely to have fewer car accidents. They will be better employees. They won’t take many “sick days.” They will do the job they said they would do. Etc. Etc. It’s really as simple as that.
Lower FICO scores means more excuses for why they didn’t arrive at work today. That means I have more work with this client (as a coach/mentor) simply because they have adapted to a specific set of non-wealth producing and retaining behaviors.

A credit score is a reliable, simple, litmus test for one’s RECENT historic trust and reliability. It also predicts near term trust and reliability, remarkably well.
And you need this information about the people who you want to help you on your life journey, because no one can go it alone. It’s just not possible.
I hear it all the time, “Kev, I’m being coached by ________ for (This purpose)…”
I typically remember when they went broke.
There is NO SIN in going broke, by the way. A lot of people can come back from blowing it and flourish. Never kid yourself.
I simply don’t want YOU to join the ranks of the broke.
In case it isn’t glaringly obvious, you want a GREAT COACH/MENTOR, and the good news? …you have an (almost) fool proof way of determining if you have a good one or not. Now that I have 86’ed any stragglers, let’s look at what else it takes to SUCCEED.
Definition of Success: Accomplishment of your outcomes in all important aspects of your life including the RETENTION of acquired wealth.
Last night I was telling Tia that I do NOT set goals. (At least not in any traditional sense of the word.) I haven’t for 20 years. It’s fine to use the word if we change the definition. But instead let’s just use a different word. Fair enough?
What’s the next MetaKey to Success?…
META KEY 2: Determine Your Outcome then Make it Happen
If not goals, then what? Determine in advance what outcomes will occur and then go and do them.
This is true for every successful person I know.
Outcomes CANNOT be based on luck or divine intervention. If you can control an outcome, it’s a REAL DESIRED OUTCOME. If you cannot, it is not.
Example: You can NOT control whether your book will be picked up by a publisher. That is a HOPE.
You CAN control whether your book will be published by a publisher OR by your SELF. That is an outcome.
Simple as that.
Success is about attitudes. You need a FEW STRONG and unyielding ATTITUDES… and you need them all year.
Success is about BIG actions. EVERY SINGLE DAY. There is no, “do a little each day baloney.”
People who do “a little every day” get their BUTTS KICKED in life. They get wiped out.
Getting what you want is NOT about setting goals.
META KEY 2A: Getting what you REALLY want is about deciding and then doing it. (You will get details in the following pages)
META KEY 2B: Getting what you want is about having a WRITTEN and EVOLVING plan. You BEGIN with the plan for the year and then ADJUST regularly. (Weekly evolution is ideal.)
Acquiring Outcomes is simply about CONSISTENT COMPLETION of Desired Outcomes.
Success is about predicting the future effectively. You’ll need to learn how to do this.
It’s about specific wealth building and retention strategies. (I’ve seen almost NOTHING written on this…)
Critical Point: Success is NOT about making money the central focus of your life. If you do, you fail.
Start thinking in the terms of how Monopoly is REALLY played
Four of us played Monopoly over Christmas.
Smart Monopoly players, those who REALLY get the game, realize that the rolls of the dice themselves are 100% luck. You can’t control the dice. So you put your attention on what you CAN control.
You can get lucky in Monopoly, just like anything in life, and win.
It does happen.
I’ve seen stupidity turn into hundreds of thousands of dollars right before my very eyes.
Excellent Monopoly players win the VAST majority of games they play.
How is that possible in a game where EVERY roll of the dice is random?!
There are a few keys in the game that separate the winners and everyone else.
This was Tia’s first time playing Monopoly. (The game is uncommon in Sofia)
You must acquire certain properties…those that are landed on the most frequently (and return the highest rents) and then get hotels on them as quickly as possible. When you do this, you will win the vast majority of your games.
But this isn’t quite perfect either.
This concept is called UTILITY VALUE and is very important to everything I teach.
There is yet another aspect of life that is very important to capture. The quicker you act to get hotels up in Monopoly, on average, the better your chances of winning the game.
It’s not JUST utility value that predicts winners. It’s SPEED of BIG ACTIONS. It takes TIME to get hotels on Boardwalk.
Boardwalk is landed on quite often in Monopoly but by the time a player can afford a hotel there they may have already lost to the guy who has the purple properties who put up hotels early and fast.
Hotels on the purple properties, late in the game, just aren’t going to beat Red, Orange or Yellow. But EARLY in the game, you can negotiate for those purples (St. Charles, etc.) and capture a LOT of income to BUY or trade for, the sunshine properties. Remember, the roll of the dice is random but the GAME itself is NOT remotely random.
The Orange properties, followed by Red, Yellow and Purple are the best groups to own. So you MUST trade for these properties. If you can get the purple group early in the game you can win. Otherwise, you’ll need Orange and Red. Afraid you’ll forget? Just think of the SUN. Orange, Red, Yellow.
And this is exactly how you want to think of life. You don’t have to own Orange, but if you do you have a HUGE advantage in life.
My job is FIRST to direct you toward the SUN in your life. Those actions and ideas that will have the highest value.
Then my task is more difficult. I must get you to to TAKE BIG ACTIONS and LOTS OF ACTIONS concentrated over time.
This is why having a REAL coach or mentor is critical. Most mentors give you bogus feedback, ego stroking and lousy advice. And I don’t really mean “most” I mean MOST.
When was the last time someone told you about the Orange, Yellow and Red properties…then gave you the purple exception strategy?
Exactly. (And there is a lot more to Monopoly and life than this but you get the idea.)
Imagine you had a magic lamp, like Aladdin. You’d rub it, wait for the genie (with Robin Williams’ voice) to come out, and then ask him for what you want. This is pretty much what you are learning to do in this article today. The difference?
Magic for getting your outcomes?

A) Never reward your own behavior you want eliminated.
B) Don’t move toward outcomes and hallucinate that someone else be responsible for it.
C) If you want something, ANYTHING, YOU pay for it.
The lack of using the magic in A, B, C, explains why people are the same today as they are yesterday, over and over and over and over again and again.
I thought Tony Robbins’ quip, “Your Past Does Not Equal Your Future,” was such a great summation…of what is an excellent frame to ponder possibilities.
But it’s not how people are wired.
Most people don’t want to do that “effort” thing…or ANYTHING.
It’s not natural.
And by the way Tony is 100% right for those who See, Believe, Begin, Continue, Finish.
Hey Kev, it’s New Years!
Let’s look at a few quick “resolutions” people have made for 2017.
They are quick and fleeting. They will not be relevant conversation in February.
There are only a few things people will “make a resolution for” in the coming year.
- They want to stop being fat.
- They want to stop being paycheck to paycheck.
- They want to stop an addiction.
- They want to stop working where they work.
- They want to stop doing something they abhor.
And all of the above are the same thing. To complete, they all require the same mental process.
- I want to write a book.
- I want to be healthy.
- I want to have a new job.
- I want to do something I love.
If you read The 168 Hour Week: Living Life Your Way 24/7, you already know those are not concrete statements and abstraction will get you absolutely nothing. They don’t “work.” They don’t trigger emotions. They do make you feel good, but feeling good is not an emotion.
“I want” doesn’t work for Kevin Hogan. It doesn’t work for Tony Robbins. It doesn’t work for Donald Trump.
Here’s the first reason, “I want…” doesn’t work.
a) I want to lose weight…20 pounds.
b) I want to look in the mirror and, instead of seeing this grotesque body, I want to see a less grotesque body bordering on tolerable and be proud of myself for what I accomplished…it’s going to be so worth it because I will no longer be invisible in society. I will be able to show anyone that I am in charge of my body and my brain.
Which is going to work?
Scientific research reported in The 168 Hour Week: Living Life Your Way 24/7, says the abstraction of, “I want to lose 20 pounds,” doesn’t work.
Only those instructions that are concrete will be acted upon.
There’s lots of other option “b” frames; that one simply worked for me.
People who just want to “feel good” are addicts. They are addicted to whatever “feels good.” And I don’t blame them a bit. I like to feel good, too.
I just don’t look at today as more important tomorrow. I want to feel good tomorrow and next month and the fourth Tuesday of 2017.
I will easily pay the price of one day of feeling irritable to get 10 that will be awesome.
But, if I get my fix today…well…you know what happens to our Resolution at that point…
All of the things people want are all the spam words that trap emails in your filters. Why? Because the spamsters know that people will pay anything to “lose weight”, “make more money”, “get more or better sex”….see how that works…
But here is the deal.
Today, let’s solve the problem.
Make a revolution happen…
Only in the past 20 years has obesity, for example, (lack of Self Regulation 101) become a critical and national social/health issue.
And it’s made worse by the “love me as I am,” garbage that is encouraged by the same people that sold “The Secret”.
The fact is that love has nothing to do with how fat you are.
Fat people (defined as those wider than 17.5 inch airline seats) know they are fat. They know they desperately need Self Regulation Strategy or they will get diabetes, lose a kidney, their eyesight, get cancer and shortly thereafter die.
Love Me as I Am?
How about we “smack you in the head where you are?”
OF COURSE we love regardless of where someone is on their life path. BUT we definitely can point out the challenge and offer to help them along the way.
Love is not about letting someone jump off a building while you smile and wish them a good trip down.
Love is not about letting your friend or someone you really care about go unchecked on their long-term weight gain trek.
Every fat person knows that there is a skinny person inside. Almost no one needs to be fat. Being fat is NOT a disease. It’s the result of simple addiction. And addiction isn’t a disease, either. It’s simply a result of reinforced and rewarded behavior.
Should there be discrimination against fat people?
…or, should I say…only if you really care about the fat person…
The more pressure you have to reduce to a healthier weight the better.
OK, I clocked in about 188 today. eh… In the last 20 years, I’ve been as high as 226 and as low as 180. Fat for my height can be generally agreed upon at 210 or more, it’s arguable at 200 and I’d be fine for pride at my typical stop point of about 183. That’s where I was when I was in Sofia. Upon returning home I ate 5 pounds of something. Doesn’t matter what. Now it’s back to 183. That’ll be February 1. Sigh.
See I’m just a person like you. I gain five pounds “during the holidays” just like you.
Here’s the deal. It doesn’t matter.
It’s predictable and it comes off at about 1/3 the pace you put it on.

But to worse times…
I’ve been fat….and it’s ridiculous. It’s stupid. It’s gross.
If I were to get comfortable at 220 and say, “oh love me…” the correct response is NOT to let me nosedive off the building, but to shake me senseless until I have a chance to staple my lips shut.
Sure, love the man but love does not encourage diabetes.
If you care about someone, care about them. If you don’t, give them the damn cookies they ask for. The kidneys will be shutting down in no time flat… You fall, you have severe hypotension. You go to the hospital. Sometimes you die. Sometimes you don’t.
It’s like shooting dice.
And never think that the threat of diabetes, cancer and death, are motivating. They are not. Threats of bad things happening do ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to move someone to grab their daily dose of Self-Regulation.
“Someday you will get diabetes….”
“Someday those cigarettes will kill you.”
It feels good now.
How do you win over what feels good??…
And in the End…
So do THIS scientific experiment with me:
- Write down one outcome that you WILL DO in an absolutely concrete fashion. One paragraph. No more than that.
- Send an E-mail to: Experiment (AT) kevinhogan.com every single day telling me you did whatever was required to get that outcome later in the year or whenever. I WILL read every email. I will NOT respond often, if ever. I promise.
- Never quit e-mailing every day, even if there is no Internet on the cruise ship or at the relatives. Email every single day.
- Keep the outcome on a PAPER/note card right by your computer or on your desk where you are every day. NEVER put it away. NEVER store it in your computer.
- Accept that you’ll likely screw up. If you screw up, e-mail that fact. I don’t care if you screw up. You are now human. If you screw up five days in a row at performing a specific action that requires no brain power, that you have chosen for your Self, and have a constant trigger for, face up on the desk, on the other hand…write me and tell me that you have QUIT the Experiment. It’s not a sin.
- Let me know when you have achieved your outcome (taken actual control over this one thing in your life)
- Persist until you succeed.
It’s that simple.

Decision IS Destiny
If you could point to one word, to one factor, to one element or cause of what happens to you in your life, it is decision.
You make decisions all the time. Generally speaking, the more decisions a person makes, the more successful they are.
The better a person is at making decisions, the more successful they are.
When you move from your old home to the home you are in now; maybe you moved because you wanted a bigger house, or to put the kids in a better school district. Maybe it was just closer to where your job is…more convenient.
And of course in the case of uprooting and moving your family, you’re talking about a lot of variables, a lot of things to consider. You’re going to find out how to make the right decision in which house to buy and where to move.
What about leaving your job for some other opportunity?
FEAR enters the picture quite clearly and because the future is seemingly unpredictable, you feel frozen or stuck as to what to do, so you immediately default to stay in your same job. But there is a way to make this decision much easier. And you’ll be pleasantly surprised when you do….
But there are also the smaller decisions of life.
- Which movie to go see…
- Which show to watch on TV….
- What to make for dinner…
- Whether to go to the game or stay home….
- Whether to take a vacation with or without the kids…
- Whether to wear blue or black…
There is a simple method that takes little thinking at all to make these day to day decisions.
And then there are decisions that you make that influence other people’s lives like taking a new job, going into business for yourself, moving to a new area, having a surgery that has risks involved….
How do you know what to do? Don’t worry, most people haven’t got a clue as to how to make the right decision every time, and there is a right decision to make.
Then there are Destiny Decisions…those decisions that you make that will literally determine where you are going to be in three years or five years.
These are REALLY IMPORTANT decisions. Every day I see people screwing them up as if they are no big deal.
You’ll find out a methodical system that might take a very short amount of time or significantly longer depending on circumstances. Nevertheless, you will find out exactly what to do every time.
Obviously there are plenty of Black Swan’s (unexpected random events like hurricanes and terrorism) out there to get in the way of what you want in life, but nothing you can control impacts your life more than decision.
Write that down.
Put it on the refrigerator.
That alone is worth $10,000, yes?

How would life be different if you knew you were going to make the right decision, every time?
Did you know that in life, there is almost always a best decision?
What would happen if you had the method for decision?
What would it be worth to have a simple systematic approach to decision making where the guidelines are from your head and heart?
Most people are paralyzed with uncertainty about whether they should:
- Ask the girl to marry them.
- Make a purchase.
- Move from one place to another…
- Quit their job…
- Decide between committing one person or another.
- Start a business…
- Ask the girl to go out with them…
- Send the letter or not…
- Decide between hiring one person or another.
- Get a divorce….
- Send your kids to public or private school….
- Choose between a new car, a used car or no car….
- Go back to school to get more education….
- Fire the person or not.
- Invest in stocks, bonds, real estate and not screw up.
- Accurately plan for their future in all areas.
Why Do People Make Bad Decisions?
And…they make bad decisions because…we all have about 8-10 areas of failure in our brain….similar experiences where you make the wrong decisions over and over again.
(Like marrying the same guy five times, dating jerks, working for idiots, saying the wrong thing at the worst time, etc. Sound familiar?)
We’ll repair all of that. (If we don’t, life will be the same tomorrow as it has been in the past….)
Did you know there is a proven way to make the right decision in each of the above choices?
For the sake of discussion, let’s assume that is correct. There IS a method you can use to make the RIGHT decision just about every time.
It doesn’t take a genius to think, “I decide to make more money,” “lose weight,” “get a better job,” “get married to perfect person x”.
KEY: Learning the process of making the right decision involves making that decision STICK, be UNYIELDING and barring a Black Swan, guaranteeing you will follow through.
Over the last 15 years we’ve been fortunate to have studied the raw information about how to make laser beam accurate decisions. Complex software programs have shown scientists how to simplify the decision making process using some mostly simple (sorry, it’s not ALL instantly easy!) rules.
And now, you don’t need the software or the computer any more…
And, by the way, in the last 15 years there has been an incredible amount of research done about decision making that teach and use VERY FAULTY processes, that can’t and don’t work.
KEY: You’ll experience FIRST HAND, how what seems to be an obvious decision, is almost always the wrong one….the costly one…(often the disaster one….)
If you follow that teacher’s advice, you’ll flat out screw up.
You’ll end up with next to nothing and headaches and heartaches to boot.
People, including a lot of authors, are lazy.
They don’t do the research.
They don’t test.
Why should they?
They get paid the same no matter what and when YOU screw up, they just say, “you did it wrong.”
Play along for just a moment.
Can I ask you a question?
Have you ever read that it’s been proven that 93% of all communication is body language?
Of course, lots of times. Everyone has read that.
And of course, it’s not true.
(It’s not even close to accurate.)
How could that be, it’s common knowledge…isn’t it?
There was one study done by a brilliant communication researcher 35 years ago that evaluated people saying one word to another, with the other person only being able to see the person from the neck UP. (that leaves about 90% of the body out of the study.) In this one specific instance, Dr. Mehrabian found that about 93% of the communication sent was at a nonverbal level. Obviously when people communicate with more than one word and people can see below the neck, all kinds of factors change the percentages.
Problem is people read something in a book written by Goofball X and they believe what she writes because she says it’s “scientific.”
People look at their lives and think, “I did everything I was told…”
Yep and look at that life. It didn’t work.
The guru didn’t do the research. They went with the party line and taught that.
I don’t care about the party line because I don’t like the people at the party.
Remember when Benjamin Franklin did his famous experiment about testing each of the virtues (temperance and so forth) for a month so he could eventually become adept at all of them? I’ve heard most motivational speakers talk or write about this. I’d name them, but it would take an entire page…
Anyway…You remember… but he gave up the idea after the first week …he never did the experiment. He wrote early in his biography that he was going to do the project and then soon after decided not to. Basically he said it was impossible to do such a thing.
I’ve never heard ANYONE get that right, either.
But THEY TEACH YOU TO DO IT…
And because you trust them YOU TRY IT and FAIL.
Franklin’s personal challenge didn’t work for all kinds of reasons I’ll show you later.
Question: Why did you believe he actually did the project?
Only one reason: …because someone you trusted or believed, an author, a teacher….told you that it was true.
Want a quick way to filter a crummy guru out?
If they tell you that story, they didn’t get very far in Franklin’s biography. If they tell you that, they’d tell you anything.
By the way…what did Franklin do instead?!
I’ll show you that at Decision Point, too.
The point is that MOST of the stuff people tell you to do…. that is “scientific,” that is based on laws of the universe or proven techniques is nothing more than their imagination having run wild.
…and following their advice will get you the same ultimate destination, every time…
