You wonder all the time…is what they are saying true or not.
Are they lying to you?
The answer is yes.
In fact deception is so prevalent in everyday communication that it’s a wonder anyone can actually remember anything they really said to someone else. (And, in fact, they often don’t because the part of the brain that most often generates a lie is not immediately conscious!)
FACT: A couple of years ago I reported on research that showed that people lie about three times in every 10 minutes of conversation. So if you talk for an hour, that’s 18 lies. That’s a lot of deception…
This series of articles will reveal the latest research about deception, including self deception and how you can ultimately understand:
- why people do this (including you and me)
- who is mostly likely to not deceive others or themselves
- how to influence the person when they are deceiving (remember that’s about 18 times per hour in a conversation)
Begin with a few factoids…the stuff that captivates on Facebook…
It turns out that married couples deceive each other more than single people do.
It turns out that women tend to lie about different things than men.
It turns out that women lie much more about infidelity than men do…to at least one group of listeners.
Women and Infidelity
A fascinating piece of research out recently shows that in large random groups of women who are hooked up to a (fake) lie detector admit infidelity to researchers more than twice as often as those who simply volunteered to take part in an anonymous questionnaire study.
Up until about 10 year ago it was commonly taught that about half of men and a quarter of women…got into trouble…outside of their own relationship.
The argument was that it was far fewer women engaging with a larger population of men.
This I never bought into and in fact it is not correct.
The raw math and logistics doesn’t work when you think about it from the perspective of modeling the behavior.
And now we know.
The answer is in the reporting.
And of course we constantly learn more about how men and women really believe and how they communicate that information to them-Selves.
This brings up all kinds of interesting questions you want to know the answers to…like, “how do we know when people are going to be honest with me?”
The Honor System with Eyes
Ever see those “honor system” candy boxes around your office or in your building? You know…. where you can buy a Reese’s or a Hershey’s or Kit Kat and pay 50 cents into the cardboard container…all on honor?
Turns out that if the vendor puts a poster of eyes watching over the candy box, more than TWICE the amount of money per item, ends up in the box at the end of the week. Cheap investment to induce honesty.
How might you use that at home and at the office?

Deception and Children
Now there’s a lot of deception emanating from children as well.
We teach our kids to become good at deceiving.
“Yes Grandpa, that’s a wonderful Christmas present…thank you so much.”
(Grandpa is terrible at Christmas shopping, but my son has been instructed well to show kindness….just like yours.)
And it goes beyond that. We teach our kids to lie to everyone…and then of course demand that they tell us the truth…. creating a world that the pre-8 year old can’t comprehend as they haven’t totally separated from you as a parent in their identity …thus making you a “you know what” in their mind too….permanently.
The psychological schema (predictable pattern of often less than useful behavior) that develops from this is called “mistrust.” All for another day.
Buyers are Liars…
And then there are your prospects, clients and customers.
For years salespeople have said, “buyers are liars,” and of course it’s true. Problem is we’re all so good at self deception that we rarely see (read that again) our own deception of our selves…we only sense it in others until we become painfully aware of how often we deceive in our own communication.
In other words, we deceive ourselves consciously and unconsciously (more) everyday.
What is going on?
KEY POINT: Scientists are now studying deception and they are finding out that those who deceive have a big advantage in nature.
KEY POINT: It may not be nice, desirable, ethical or right…but it is normal behavior….!
There are lots of behaviors that are “abnormal” that are at least adaptive and often desirable, and this is one where judgment is important.
All animals deceive. It doesn’t take a human to deceive…and it doesn’t take a bad human to deceive.
Primates strategically deceive…able to misdirect competitors in the group to another location while they eat where the food is. Not always…only when food is short in abundance.
Orchids deceive bees. (I’ll explain this bizarre fact…another day…orchids are flowers…by the way.)
It’s adaptive, normal behavior. Deception helps insure survival on the level of one and on the level of the group.
We all hate being lied to.
Most people hate to lie.
And herein is the problem.
Here’s the thing…
Knowing that everyone else is being lied to is one thing.
“Oh, I figured that the whole time.”
Problem: She’s Lying to YOU!
Knowing that YOU are being lied to is quite another.
“You mean, she’s lying to me?! Why?! How?!”
Really? Aren’t you just being paranoid? Aren’t you just looking for something that isn’t there?
We all sometimes hope that is the case.
And then you feel righteously indignant….even when you realize that you’re no different! Because… we hate being deceived.
Because we are lied to so much, so often, many people recognize cues in the behaviors of others that they believe are signs of deception. Sometimes they are right and sometimes they are woefully and painfully wrong.
And we had to evolve to become human lie detectors as well because being able to snuff out deception is adaptive as well. (It makes you live longer, safer, etc.)
Unfortunately, because of the way the human brain is wired, we are “right” about the deception of others about 1/2 the time. We saw the cue. They were deceiving. It was a biggie. And we got it right, even though they vehemently denied it.
But then because there were 10 other nonverbal cues happening at the same time, not to mention the words that were being said…we also unconsciously associated THOSE cues with lying too. And the next time we saw them…you guessed it…we told them, “you’re lying,” and this time you were wrong and they were indignant.
Both times they vehemently denied, but they were deceiving only once.
That creates intensely emotional associations and resentments that last a long time…of being falsely accused…and for the other person…strong associations of emotional denial when you know that something fishy has been going on.
And this is how so many problems in personal and business relationships begin.
Both people are taking part in often unconscious or non-conscious (do a google search at my website to read about the differences) deception. Doesn’t matter. It’s adaptive. They are trying to be safe and secure in their environment. So they deceive. They have to because they are human and it’s wired in to the brain as much as going to the bathroom is.
The “Natural Born” Deceiver
Key Point: Last year I wrote a lot about “will” and whether we have conscious “control” over most of our actions. And the scientific research tells us that the words you just said don’t register in your own brain for 500 milliseconds AFTER you have said them.
(Read that again.)
Fact is, there is a part of the brain that has developed in humans that causes self deception that we were not intended (from an evolutionary standpoint) to be aware of. The person who can deceive himself finds it much easier to deceive others.
The person who becomes skilled at deceiving herself is a much more believable deceiver.
And because of this, people become natural born deceivers and have also adapted to become curious and detective-like inquisitors…to normally live in a state of disbelief of others and what they say.
Self-deception happens when….? For men? Women?
A great deal of self deception happens when we tell stories and leave out the context or key elements in the story where, if told, would change the perception of the person being talked about completely.
FACT: Most deceit, in fact, happens when people are telling stories.
And stories capture the imagination (or can bore the listener to death…but that is another article as well).
My Aunt Sandra, who “said it like it is”, often hurt the feelings of those around her. Not intentionally… she was just one of those few people who never cut a corner…at least consciously in communication. She told people when their hair looked bad and they were getting too fat.
And of course,…that “ability” to ALWAYS tell the truth isn’t going to make life better or easier, as so many saw in Jim Carrey’s movie, “Liar, Liar”.
Honesty is not adaptive for reproduction.
Prevarication, Embellishment, Story-telling
Women spend an hour in front of a mirror covering up who they are while men spend an hour thinking up stories to tell that woman so they will find him more interesting….
In fact, so much of our conscious behavior is spent thinking about what and how to cover up for various reasons that the conscious self is very different from the non-conscious self in personality. (I’ve discussed this in depth in Science of Influence CD Library volumes 25-36)
As I said, self deception is prevalent.
- 70% of high school seniors believe they have greater than average leadership ability
- 97% of mutual fund managers believe they are better than average. (And their actual numbers are easily available on any financial website!)
- 80% of women think they are above average automobile drivers
- 90% of men think they are above average automobile drivers
- 1,000,000 college students were surveyed nationally on the same day: ALL million said they were better than average at getting along with others!
- 60% of those same million put themselves in the top 10% in the ability to get along with others and a full 25% said they were in the top 1% in getting along with others!
- 93% of college professors believe they are above average in their profession.
Ready for a big one:
- Homophobic men are almost always more likely to be aroused significantly more than non-homophobic men when watching men do it with other men…..(as measured in the way you can only imagine and I can’t write about…..)
Who’s best at avoiding self-deception?
Self Deception in Public
To take self deception even further…in public… when social research is taking place in the real world, here’s what can happen….
An actor is on a sidewalk having a seizure (he’s an actor). When there is no one around except for one passerby, the single person almost always stops and helps.
The more people that are around, the faster the number of people who are willing to even go NEAR the person diminishes.
They say, “I thought someone else would help him.”
Obviously “they” were all watching, too….
Asked later in these research experiments held all over the world, NO ONE ever agrees or knows that the people around them had any impact on their own behavior or lack of action in helping people in desperate need of help.
Who deceives and experiences significantly LESS self deception of others?
You’ll never guess.
Those who are clinically depressed are significantly less deceptive of others.
The clinically depressed person not only deceives others significantly less, they deceive themselves significantly less and all research shows they have a far more accurate view of the world in every way than those who are not clinically depressed.
Another case where “abnormal” is in some ways adaptive if not desirable.
Depressives suffer a deficit in self deception, as self deception is normal behavior and depression is one of the manifestations of someone who doesn’t (or can’t effectively) deceive themselves.
Depressed People are Perceptive
The latest psychological research shows that the more depressed a person is (Beck Inventory) the more accurate their view of the world and other people’s perceptions of them, is.
So with all of this going on that we weren’t aware of yesterday…how do we influence people who are “normal” and deceive a great deal vs. those who are depressed and deceive very little?
There is a BIG difference.

Why It’s Critical to Know What the Body is Saying
What people say could often be very different from what they’re thinking or feeling. It’s very easy to say something untrue or insincere, so we can never rely on words alone.
Fortunately, there’s a proven way to accurately decode people’s thoughts, emotions or mood – and that’s by reading their body language. People may lie, but their body silently and unconsciously speaks the truth.

Are You Making These Mistakes In Body Language?
Studies indicate you have realistically closer to 4 seconds to make a good first impression on those you come in contact with. And this is used as a yardstick for all future communication by those whom you meet.
In the first four seconds, people will make judgments about you and tell themselves:
- I will (or will not) buy from this person.
- I will (or will not) like this person.
- I find this person kind (or not).
- I find this person intelligent (or not).
You can’t make a good first impression through your words alone. In fact, nonverbal communication is between 60 to 75% of the impact of a communication. But despite being the most important aspect, body language is also the most misunderstood and misinterpreted.
Every action – or even the smallest micro-action – communicates subconsciously to others, so people could like (or not like) you through your gestures… without even knowing exactly why.
You could be making the most wonderful compliments or praise to people, but it’s difficult to gain their trust or approval if your words contradict with your body language.
These body language photos will show you some of the basic and advanced techniques used to interpret body language. This girl is flirting with you. “But her arms are crossed, that’s defensive,” some might say. They are wrong. Head tilt to her left, hard time not grinning too big, while looking right at you. She likes you.
Flirting and sexual body language is something you can quickly spot in a woman’s body language – as well as a man’s – in both business and personal context.
Body language revealing the liar is easily identified in both business and personal context when you know how to properly interpret the signs. I’ll show you this later.
Whether you want to learn the body language of love, dating or closing the deal, welcome! The analysis I’m going to give you as part of this preview includes both “liking” and deception judgments. It is fairly complex to analyze human behavior in snapshots in time.
See this guy. By looking at him, that smirk should mean he’s being perceived poorly and he’s fighting for his life. But no, check out the over the shoulder look of the first girl. Women inspect over their shoulders with curiosity…until that split second where liking or not occurs. These two will connect…..BELOW…I made judgments on the relationships of the couples based solely upon these photographs and the context in which they were taken. (This is as little as you have to go on with most media. It IS a challenge.)
In this preview, my goal for you is to become aware of a few subtle cues that you are going to begin picking up from now on. Instead of telling you each little signal in a boring, clinical way, I’m going to let you have some fun and invest just a few minutes into being a body language expert with me.

What Can You Interpret About a Person’s
Body Language From a Photograph?
|Example 1 – Barack Obama.|
Barak Obama certainly is known for his striking IMAGE.
Notice the intensity on his face. The cheek bones. The strength of his jaw. The back of a soldier.
This is a POWERFUL IMAGE that won an election because it was backed up with a message of VISION and not policies. We’ll revisit Obama throughout his term and see if the image holds.
|Example 2 – Carmen Electra.|
Whoa! Look at all the space between these two.
It’s like they are afraid to touch one another – the other is infected with….something. Notice how they keep their most private parts as far away from each other as possible.
Considering the fact that these two split up after being “inseparable” in photos during their all too brief marriage, it seems at this point things must have been a bit shaky.
Most happy couples are alot more giving and generous with their body language.
|Example 3 – Body Language of Nicky Hilton with ex-boyfriend Brian Connolly.|
Question: “Kevin, will these two last?” Answer…observe…
Notice Nicky’s body language. The knee elevated against her boyfriend’s right leg. Her left leg supporting her entire body. The expressionless smile as she poses for the other photographer.
One clue I always look for is, “Where is the cell phone.” Pocket or hand. Answer: Hand. No, this will not last.

Tom, one of my favorite funny guys is holding his girlfriend so tightly, she is like the caged bird that must fly away.
Notice you can see the white in Tom’s fingers. Check out the facial color. Observe the closeness of his head to Shelby in contrast to where it would be if he were standing straight.
This is a classic photo sequence of “boy ecstatic to be with this girl.” Unfortunately I had to report the relationship would not last.
|Example 5 – Bruce Springsteen and Patti Scialfa|
Bruce Springsteen and Patti are like yin and yang. Almost all photo’s of these two together reveals a mirror image of each other and this is no exception.
Even when they are turning their legs/feet are the same! Then notice how similar their hands are positioned and of course his and hers sun glasses.
There’s more in the program about these guys and this sequence of photos; but when two people mirror each other this perfectly, they are likely to stay together.
Why Does the Media Refer to Me as “The Nation’s Leading Body Language Expert?”

I was well aware of how American CITIZENS would respond and react to what they saw in the debates and sound bites. The body language of Gore and Kerry was offputting to the undecided voters. In both cases, I told the BBC what would happen.
In fact, I predicted the US election in 2000 would be decided by less than 50,000 votes, an almost statistical impossibility. When it came down to ONE VOTE, everyone was shocked, except me…I had made it public days before the election with Bush and Gore, and then again with Kerry and Bush.
