Oh it hurts.
You’re not invited. Everyone else was.
Exclusion from the group.
The salesman gets it at the door.
The Dad from his child.
The Husband from the wife.
The employee from her boss.
Social psychologists cluster the study of all things rejection under the heading of being ostracized.
Being ostracized has devastating health impacts. It leaves emotional scars. It’s one of those hurts that just doesn’t stop hurting.
It’s because of this that those people who are willing to face the world who constantly face rejection or being ostracized often command significantly better salaries in jobs that involve selling.
But those familiar with being rejected and ostracized continue to feel the pain whether they are well compensated or not.
In this series of articles, you get to see all the sides of rejection. You’ll find out what it is, why it hurts, how to get past it when you feel it and how to overcome it before it happens in the first place.
No one has ever talked seriously about what rejection REALLY is and why it hurts so bad. Why it can more debilitating than many diseases.
No one has ever shown proven techniques to overcome the intense feelings of pain you feel when you are rejected.
No one. Nowhere.
I’m just like you.
I get rejected. I hurt.
But, you and I can get rejected, hurt a lot less, and in some areas you and I can let rejection roll off the proverbial back. In some aspects of life nothing will ever just roll off the back. But there is much you can do to begin to lessen the pain and in some contexts dramatically reduce the pain of being excluded and/or rejected. And I’ll show you all of this as we progress.
What is Rejection?
Rejection is what happens when you perceive that someone or some group is pushing you away, saying “no”, not letting you be in-group or participating.
In short: You want them, what they have or to be included…and they won’t let you have them, what they have or inclusion.
That’s what rejection IS. That says nothing about how it FEELS or what YOU can actually DO about it.
It begins with…The Rejector
Next, realize that rejection happens in at least two places when it happens. In the mind(s) of the rejector and in the mind(s) of the rejected.
Can you really overcome rejection? How?:
Let’s start at home.
Imagine that your wife or partner rejects you temporarily (not tonight, honey) or permanently (bye, I’m taking the kids, cut me a check).
The feelings you have inside for either scenario are pretty downcast but the latter is far more painful, right? (Probably…)
After all, there are numerous different reasons she may not want to xyz tonight…so you might find it necessary to only be frustrated or thwarted instead of feeling rejected.
Therefore, the reason and the magnitude of which you are being rejected are both significant in the feeling and potential destruction of the Rejection Factor.
By comparison. A case of stomach flu doesn’t hurt or damage nearly as much as the devaluation of you as a person where someone else is the preferable option for a life partner. There is a wide range of feelings in the Rejection Arena….
The Connection Factor
Another factor that wires into the Rejection Formula is that of Connection.
This is huge because you might love your wife soooooo (10) much. You feel so connected to her there is no other picture in your mind. Your “Connection Factor” is given a value of 10. Of course, that’s YOUR connection….not hers.
She has been married to you for x years and may only feel a connection factor of 4. All is not equal in the mathematics of love….
The Feeling Factor
For the sake of simplicity, we’ll call just how deeply you FEEL pain at the point of rejection (sort of like the “point of sale” in a store…) the “Feeling Factor”. You can assign a “number” here as well. If she says, “no, not tonight, honey,” that could be rejection but maybe you feel that “pain” at a level of 2 out of 10…not so bad…definitely could be worse.
Meanwhile, if you are very sensitive to rejection in general (or from this person in specific) then “no not tonight, honey” could be interpreted as, “I mean nothing to her.” Your self assessed personal pain value in influenced by your contextual self-esteeand is FELT as 7 on the pain scale.
The difference between the two is the historic aftermath of rejection for one person in contrast to another.
Some people have experienced much more rejection and some have experienced more profound rejection.
Part of that cluster of experiences is how you feel about yourself and part of it is how and what you BELIEVE SHE FEELS about you.
Ultimately the pain of a rejection means you have given a significant weighting to the opinion of the person who is rejecting you in any given situation.
Rejection is NOT simply, “No, I already have one. I don’t have the money. Try me again next year.”
Rejection is comprised of several factors.
Understand first there is a wide spectrum of large, medium and small rejection experiences. Dealing with rejection in middle of the road scenarios like sales calls will become manageable, as you will discover in this series.
If you don’t see the different colors and components, then all rejection is going to be experienced as the same and that is going to be felt at Level 10 and that is a very bad thing indeed!
So before we go there, one more time:
“Bye, taking the kids, cut a check,” is in all seriousness, big. Your personal self worth tanks and The Feeling Factor is at level 9 or 10. At least in this context, it is postal…
10 is profound and deep pain…and that’s the biggest Rejection Factor there is. An RF of 10 causes people to do some pretty intense things. It has to. That’s humans are wired. You are going to hurt, feel pain inside. You are going to be angry. With an RF of 10, anything that happens next is believable or possible. (Delete the new boyfriend, stalk, self harm, etc.)
People *react* to pain, which is why it’s always a good idea to soften the rejection YOU give to OTHERS…but other people rarely take you into consideration when they are saying, “no.”
Low Connection Value
Imagine you are single or divorced and you’ve decided to head out for the night.
You go to the nightclub and DECIDE to offer to buy a girl a drink. She is rather nice. You ponder your approach, vector and altitude…and you decide…you will go for it!
You DO get up the nerve to offer to buy her a drink.
Of course, she says, “no.” (?!)
You had no significant investment in the girl beyond perhaps the 10 minutes of fantasizing. No one else heard you or saw what happened. The connection value was potentially high (which factors into the actual value) but the duration of the connection was utterly brief. One minute.
So the connection value to you was perhaps 2.
KEY POINT: It’s normal to have these seemingly “quickie rejections” be experienced as more intense than 2. Lots of people feel them at 4,5,6 because once you have a “picture” in your mind, of what you own you don’t want “it” taken away from you.
In this case you got nothing back.
It stings, but for most, not too bad…though if it does, it would be worth recording that fact for reducing the pain of rejection later in this set of articles. Specifically, if you hurt from being rejected and the sum of the affair was a 10 minute affair in your head, you want to recognize that you take possession very quickly and I’ll show you how to handle that later as well.
For the moment, remember that the longer you think about “it” the more attached you become to “it.”
Medium Connection Value
If she said yes to the drink, danced a few dances and then moved on to another guy, you have a different feeling right?
You have decided that she holds you in no positive light at all. You have been swapped out for a better dancer. That sting is worse. The connection was longer. The tryout for the team was given serious consideration. The more she got to know you the less she wanted to be there. Big warm fuzzy right?
This is why Elvis Presley, John Lennon and George Harrison all used the line “I’d rather see you dead little girl than to be with another man…” in songs they sang. Profound!
If only you would have left after the drink….
So, assuming you didn’t follow through on the imagery of popular recording artists, the next day is a new day.
You go to work. Your connection factor can easily be pretty high there. You are with the people and in the confines of work a lot more hours than you are with the people you “go home too.”
A lot of people have been working the same job for 20 years. They can even hate their job but the connection is a ten.
It’s where they have been accepted for 20 years. Where they have the perceived mutual respect of people for 20 years. And today the person gets fired. And today that person is you, for example.
This is not good.
Because if it’s you, you will feel pretty bad.
If you internalize the pain instead of externalizing it, you can expect feelings of profound sadness. And this pain is going to last a long, long time.
The concept of rejection now makes sense…how it hurts and why we do the things we do when we react.
It is an earthquake. There is no warning and there is no rule book…until now…on what to do…
Quick Summary and then The Rules:
The Connection Factor is how connected a person feels to a person or group.
The Feeling Factor is how a person feels about themselves after they have been rejected (or a perceived rejection).
Stir the Pot: Add in Relational Value
Just in case you ever read a scientific article about rejection, you might come across the term “relational value.”
Relational Value (RV) is the degree to which your relationship with another person or group is experienced as important, close, or valuable, by the OTHER person.
High RV is known as acceptance and Low RV is known as rejection.
A group doesn’t ostracize someone they value highly. They reject the person that they believe has more value to the group by being OUT of the group, than by keeping them on the inside.
The person got fired.
The person got excommunicated.
She got kicked off the cheer leading squad.
Betrayal and unrequited love fall into the same Low RV section of the continuum.
For example, you MAY have a 10 in *relational value* to your company and your family. IF you *perceive* your value to be zero, you have the same possible assortment of postal behaviors run through your mind.
PERCEIVED Relational Value (PRV) is how YOU think/feel the other person/group thinks about YOU. Your perception could be right on the nose or you could be completely incorrect!
Devaluation occurs when someone who once held you as close or important now treats you poorly, or even politely. Your “stock” has gone DOWN with them and THAT is painful.
The problem of being so connected to someone is that when your stock crashes, you have a long, long way to go down.
Thus you end up with the proverbial, “man that doesn’t want to commit.”
Devaluing can happen in business, of course. You can be fired from the job and crash. You can fail to get a job after an interview (not so big of a crash, not so far to fall).
Sensitivity to Rejection
And there is another interesting phenomenon in the whole rejection piece. You can say the same exact thing to one person and they feel utterly rejected. To another it’s experienced as completely unimportant.
Some people are sensitive to rejection in general, across a broad spectrum of experiences and life scenes.
Typically these people include those with low self-esteem, narcissists, the socially anxious and depressed, or those who have an insecure attachment style. They often see more rejection in people’s behavior than is actually there.
That said, a lot of times being blown off by someone will bother you but not someone else because the other person couldn’t give a rip whether that person valued the relationship or not.
Still other people feel rejected because they want to be super important at the company or in someone’s life and they are in fact seen as completely expendable.
Can something that has such potential for self and other destruction…does rejection have benefits?
Does rejection have ANY benefits?
When people start to feel averse to certain situations, they tend to make a point of taking care of or repairing their current relationships.
People want to do things or dress in ways that will increase their chances of being accepted. We go a long way to get attention, approval and acceptance from others.
We all (almost all) want to be seen as likeable, attractive, competent and sometimes trustworthy.
AND, people also want to be seen and experienced as UNIQUE and IR-REPLACABLE by anyone else in a group.
Is Rejection Inevitable?
Armed with all of this information, can we stop rejection or the painful feelings that come along with it?
Not in all cases.
We all want to be accepted but every day we reject others ourselves.
It often comes down to something as simple as time.
There are only so many hours in a day and you have to say “no” to someone, some groups, and things so you don’t become “over committed” and incredibly stressed out.
You can only give so much to so many people and then the battery runs out of juice.
It makes sense when you’re on THIS side of the coin, but it hurts when you are on the other side of the coin.
Time and energy are what typically define a relationship as being valuable. If you don’t make the time and energy, the relationship will dwindle.
What happens when there’s not enough (of you) to go around?
Because there is NOT enough of you to go around…:
Not Enough of You to Go Around
Ironically, someone who tries to maintain a lot of relationships can end up becoming important to many of those people.
But remember, the connection value isn’t likely to be experienced the same way by the person who juggles 40 friends and ultimately finds they can’t do it. And if they truly have been trying to keep everyone “equal,” then the chances for success in any of the relationships is close to zero.
Loyalties will be violated and the concepts of a best friend or a few best friends, becomes clear as to it’s importance.

Every day I look at beautiful websites designed by creative geniuses that do absolutely nothing in net profits. (notice that word “NET”)
Beautiful Web Sites Don’t Sell
And I see websites that I can instantly tell you ARE making money. I’ll show you how to instantly make this identification. They look like they were designed by one of my kids … which is one of the ways you know … they will do well.
There are lots of programs that show you how to build a website. (This is no longer complicated. I’ll show you how to build a website by typing as if you were typing any other document on your computer.)
Problem is having a website does you nothing if you have nothing to sell…or if you don’t know how to write in such a way that it compels your reader to trust you and buy from you … or if you don’t know how to GET PEOPLE TO YOUR WEBSITE … or if you … get the idea?
There are lots of programs that address any part of the factors in building wealth on the web. I own a bunch and I’ve learned a lot over the years. But NO ONE has put together the COMPREHENSIVE PROGRAM.

In fact, you can be an expert at say, getting traffic to your site … but if you have stuff that no one will look at for whatever reason … you make zero dollars. I don’t care if you can double that traffic. It doesn’t matter.
You MUST have ALL the pieces in place before you even CONSIDER working on the nuances.
As I look back at what I’ve accomplished on the Web, I know that it wasn’t the awesome website or the beautifully packaged program or the powerful search engine optimization (and yes, you want to evolve beyond basics) BUT it was the INCREDIBLE, UNIQUE CONTENT and having ALL the pieces in place … all the pieces of the puzzle operating competently that caused millions of dollars of business.
Everyday I learn something new but those things alone would never have gotten me where I am.
That required putting together a SYSTEM. And people need systems.
