Detecting power in men from body language cues and nonverbal communication is easier than finding the same in women.

I just got back from Europe. In Europe you see that powerful men behave very similarly to powerful men in the U.S.  That’s not same for women however.

One thing is certain, much of Eastern Europe is a fan of the current President. Many of course disagree but there was more positive than negative. That wasn’t true however in Northern Europe. One thing was certain, they all saw the President of the U.S. as a powerful man.

Certain contexts allow us to make power predictions obvious. The President of the United States in the Oval Office. Like him or not, the man has power. The power requires no clues beyond the simple.

What happens though when you aren’t in the CEO’s executive office? How do you know who has the power at the party or in a group of random people?

That is a different and more difficult task.

I’m going to use a context I enjoy to show you what to look for in neutral or random places.

Let’s use a blackjack table in the front part of a casino. (Where tourists play cards)

About 80% of players are men. In the photo here where the blonde girl has camera’s attention, not one of the men is likely to have any level of power. I see slightly above average income and nothing else. Three guys that are trying hard.

Finding the powerful men is something that you’ll do easily from today going forward.The Body Language of Powerful Men

When I sit down to play cards at a table it usually takes me 30 seconds to determine who has real power in their life. Powerful men play differently than random every day men. But I’ll wait until the end for those revelations. For now, I’ll use the Blackjack Table as a place to evaluate men as powerful or not.

I’ve met more powerful people at blackjack tables around the world than anywhere except when I’ve been called on to train and coach UHNWIs. (Ultra High Net Worth Individuals)

Those experiences have happened in castles, private banks and some extraordinary locations.

The blackjack table is a place where men from all walks of life can meet on an even playing field.

There are men who wish they had power and there are men that do.

Throw away your prejudices and stereotypes as you watch them fall to the ground.

As a side note, powerful women do NOT exhibit the same characteristics as men. The differences are typically dramatic thus today we’ll stick with the Body Language of Powerful Men.

#1 The first thing that I look for is ornamentation.

The vast majority of truly powerful men wear very little jewelry. They either have one piece which might be dramatic or none at all. On average, he flashy guy is a wannabe. The wannabe has a debt load greater than his income would allow for. There is an exception here. You will see some entertainers in the music industry adorned in gold necklaces and rings. Some of these men are indeed quite powerful but generally bling is not a predictor of power.

The guy from the IRS has in office power which is different than personal or financial power. Unless you’re at the IRS you could not care less whether or not someone has in office power.

I am looking for a cluster of cues and signs, of course, not just one ring. That big diamond on his finger could be worth $50,000 or it could be worth $50. You need a 10 power microscope to know for sure. So I never make an assumption based upon that. If I see lots of gold and stones, I know the power here is minimal.

In general, in the United States, powerful men behave the opposite of what most people would predict. I have played cards with a LOT of powerful and wealthy men. Their dress can be a pair of jeans and a t-shirt all the way to the other end of the spectrum as a perfect fitting $10,000 suit. Frankly, fancy suits do not predict power.

What you won’t see the powerful guy looking like is someone who is particularly “cool.” He wants to either look good or he just doesn’t care what anyone thinks.

I never judge anyone guilty of any income or power level based on their dress. If someone is sitting next to me at the $100 blackjack table, that means he is going to be betting at least $10,000 to $100,000 per hour. He’s either crazy or he has access to money, at least for today.

#2 Men with power tend to appear relaxed. That is my general indicator #2. If a guy is playing $100 chips and is in a nice conversation with me and not totally freaking out or getting too excited which way the game is going, I am positive that he is doing fine.

A powerful man creates a sense of safety and certainty in those he is around by being strong enough to not try and tower over others but to help THEM feel strong and safe.

Wealth predicts power and power predicts wealth.

#3 The powerful man is comfortable being quiet. He’s comfortable being engaged. He has a broad spectrum of behavior. He might tend to be so relaxed that he will raDetect Power in Body Languagendomly belittle someone but overall the person who has achieved some level of power is generally socially astute, having some fun and is comfortable in most types of situations.

#4 Powerful men know that “luck” is not real, so you don’t see the guy yelling at the dealer. If he loses that simply means his stock went down that day. It is not a huge deal…probably.

Sales guys, brokers, account exec’s dress differently than do Hollywood Producers who dress differently than the independently wealthy. They all can play high stakes but they do play a bit differently.

#5 The powerful guy, the guy that owns the company or the independently wealthy doesn’t make a show of putting out a $500 chip. He’s just as quiet about it as he is putting out a $100 chip. That’s not the case for the sales guy. He tends to be more vocal and draws more attention to his betting. (And that said, there’s some a lot of well off sales guys out there!)

#6 The powerful man tends to sit straight up. Not necessarily military, but comfortably tall. The guy who is slumped over his chips could easily be depressed or down about something but typically I look at the straighter the back the more likely the power level.

#7 In real life the powerful man tends to use dynamic and controlled gestures.  They don’t flail their arms. They are in control, they fill a space and set the minds of others around him at ease through strong but gentle movement.

#8 In real life the powerful man tends to have a direct and steady gaze. He could look at you for an hour. The game of blackjack doesn’t allow for that, as the game moves fairly quickly. In real life, the powerful man will literally stare at you for as long as he likes.

He is unwavering when you return the gaze. He also can have a conversation with you while barely looking at you once.

#9 Consciously or nonconsciously the powerful man evaluates each man he comes into contact with. Powerful men will not shout while offering direction. They tend to behave rationally and as I mentioned before earlier, because they have power, they tend to occasionally say something inappropriate. It wouldn’t be, “you look hot tonight baby.” That’s the guy who is trying to look powerful. It’s more like, “get me that coffee as soon as you can.” The directness of communication from daily life can make it to the different context at the table.

#10 The powerful man speaks with a variable voice. He has a range and you hear it. He can speak slowly and he can speak quickly. He can vary his rate and pitch. Powerless people playing a “role” tend to speak loudly, be boisterous and communicate inappropriately far more than you would expect.

#11 Powerful men tend to vary their posture often. They tend to be comfortable and use the space they have. Powerless people tend to stick with one type of posture for most of an evening.

#12 Powerful men tend to touch appropriately.They will take two fingers and tap them on your wrist to make sure you understood the point. They might touch your shoulder. They tend to not make errors in touching that would lead to a problem with men or women.

#13 The powerful man will interrupt after listening to enough. Powerful people tend to listen but only to a point. Then they have grasped what they are interested in knowing and move the conversation along. Socially they tend to be more forgiving of boredom and they tend to not re-engage the boring individual. Powerful people themselves are never boring. If you are bored…he has no power.

#14 If all the other cues line up, the powerful man will stand closer to others than average. The boorish guy at the bar will as well but he is performing attention getting behavior. The powerful man has all the oEyebrows reveal man's body languagether cards in the deck. If he stands close and still doesn’t get his face into yours, he is indeed a person of power.

#15 The powerful man tends to have his feet “steady and still”almost all of the time. The submissive man will have the feet moving and dancing.

#16 If I see a man elevating hiPower Rapports eyebrows often in a conversation he is too taken by information that is coming in. The powerful man has seen it all and is generally unaffected by most of the “WOW’s” that others react to. Lots of eyebrow movement is a sign of submissiveness.

#17 Finally, the powerful man doesn’t smile anywhere near as oftenas the submissive. And although he has a wide range of facial expressions he tends to smile only when he means it. A lot of people interpret that as not being liked and that is an error on their part.

Why It’s Critical to Know What the Body is Saying

What people say could often be very different from what they’re thinking or feeling. It’s very easy to say something untrue or insincere, so we can never rely on words alone.

Fortunately, there’s a proven way to accurately decode people’s thoughts, emotions or mood – and that’s by reading their body language. People may lie, but their body silently and unconsciously speaks the truth.

Having the right knowledge in body language allows you to uncover what your friends, co-workers, spouse, customers or anyone else, may be hiding from you. You might even understand other people’s thoughts or feelings better than they do!

Let’s face it. Even if you trust someone with your life, you’ll never have peace of mind unless you know exactly what they’re feeling or thinking inside.

The most effective way to uncover hidden desires, thoughts, or emotions is by reading and interpreting body language correctly.

And guess what?

Your own body language signals can also influence what other people may think or feel about you. If you do it right, you will be liked and trusted. But if you send the wrong signals (even if you’re unaware of it) – your business, career, relationships, and even self-esteem may suffer.

For example, if you have a habit of touching your nose, people could perceive that as a sign of deception. You might simply have that habit even if you’re telling the truth, but people can’t tell the difference. They are unconsciously interpreting your gesture as untrustworthy and judging you based on your actions.

  • Establish authority, liking, trust or respect using simple body gestures.

Are You Making These Mistakes In Body Language?

Studies indicate you have realistically closer to 4 seconds to make a good first impression on those you come in contact with. And this is used as a yardstick for all future communication by those whom you meet.

In the first four seconds, people will make judgments about you and tell themselves:

  • I will (or will not) buy from this person.
  • I will (or will not) like this person.
  • I find this person kind (or not).
  • I find this person intelligent (or not).

You can’t make a good first impression through your words alone. In fact, nonverbal communication is between 60 to 75% of the impact of a communication. But despite being the most important aspect, body language is also the most misunderstood and misinterpreted.

Every action – or even the smallest micro-action – communicates subconsciously to others, so people could like (or not like) you through your gestures… without even knowing exactly why.

You could be making the most wonderful compliments or praise to people, but it’s difficult to gain their trust or approval if your words contradict with your body language.

These body language photos will show you some of the basic and advanced techniques used to interpret body language. This girl is flirting with you. “But her arms are crossed, that’s defensive,” some might say. They are wrong. Head tilt to her left, hard time not grinning too big, while looking right at you. She likes you.

Flirting and sexual body language is something you can quickly spot in a woman’s body language – as well as a man’s – in both business and personal context.

Body language revealing the liar is easily identified in both business and personal context when you know how to properly interpret the signs. I’ll show you this later.

Whether you want to learn the body language of love, dating or closing the deal, welcome! The analysis I’m going to give you as part of this preview includes both “liking” and deception judgments. It is fairly complex to analyze human behavior in snapshots in time.

See this guy. By looking at him, that smirk should mean he’s being perceived poorly and he’s fighting for his life. But no, check out the over the shoulder look of the first girl. Women inspect over their shoulders with curiosity…until that split second where liking or not occurs. These two will connect…..BELOW…I made judgments on the relationships of the couples based solely upon these photographs and the context in which they were taken. (This is as little as you have to go on with most media. It IS a challenge.)

In this preview, my goal for you is to become aware of a few subtle cues that you are going to begin picking up from now on. Instead of telling you each little signal in a boring, clinical way, I’m going to let you have some fun and invest just a few minutes into being a body language expert with me.

What Can You Interpret About a Person’s
Body Language From a Photograph?

Example 1 – Barack Obama.

Barak Obama certainly is known for his striking IMAGE.

Notice the intensity on his face. The cheek bones. The strength of his jaw. The back of a soldier.

This is a POWERFUL IMAGE that won an election because it was backed up with a message of VISION and not policies. We’ll revisit Obama throughout his term and see if the image holds.

Example 2 – Carmen Electra.

Whoa! Look at all the space between these two.

It’s like they are afraid to touch one another – the other is infected with….something. Notice how they keep their most private parts as far away from each other as possible.

Considering the fact that these two split up after being “inseparable” in photos during their all too brief marriage, it seems at this point things must have been a bit shaky.

Most happy couples are alot more giving and generous with their body language.

Example 3 – Body Language of Nicky Hilton with ex-boyfriend Brian Connolly.

Question: “Kevin, will these two last?” Answer…observe…

Notice Nicky’s body language. The knee elevated against her boyfriend’s right leg. Her left leg supporting her entire body. The expressionless smile as she poses for the other photographer.

One clue I always look for is, “Where is the cell phone.” Pocket or hand. Answer: Hand. No, this will not last.

Example 4 – Tom Arnold and Shelby Roos.

Tom, one of my favorite funny guys is holding his girlfriend so tightly, she is like the caged bird that must fly away.

Notice you can see the white in Tom’s fingers. Check out the facial color. Observe the closeness of his head to Shelby in contrast to where it would be if he were standing straight.

This is a classic photo sequence of “boy ecstatic to be with this girl.” Unfortunately I had to report the relationship would not last.

Example 5 – Bruce Springsteen and Patti Scialfa

Bruce Springsteen and Patti are like yin and yang. Almost all photo’s of these two together reveals a mirror image of each other and this is no exception.

Even when they are turning their legs/feet are the same! Then notice how similar their hands are positioned and of course his and hers sun glasses.

There’s more in the program about these guys and this sequence of photos; but when two people mirror each other this perfectly, they are likely to stay together.

Why Does the Media Refer to Me as “The Nation’s Leading Body Language Expert?”

Hi, my name is Kevin Hogan. I’m a body language expert, social psychologist, and the author of 19 books, including “The Psychology of Persuasion” which has sold over a million copies worldwide.

I was well aware of how American CITIZENS would respond and react to what they saw in the debates and sound bites. The body language of Gore and Kerry was offputting to the undecided voters. In both cases, I told the BBC what would happen.

In fact, I predicted the US election in 2000 would be decided by less than 50,000 votes, an almost statistical impossibility. When it came down to ONE VOTE, everyone was shocked, except me…I had made it public days before the election with Bush and Gore, and then again with Kerry and Bush.
