Now you and I aren’t going to be the next Ben Franklin. Heaven knows I don’t look like Schwarzenegger, but all these people have something in common….
The last domino is the end result. The first is thought. The third is thought. The fifth is thought. The seventh is thought.. The ninth is thought…
All things being equal, the Power of the Mind is the difference between achievement and failure.
The Power of the Mind is what can cause people to go from zero to 100.
I want to show you those variables that are necessary for dramatic achievement and those variables that are often credited with causing achievement that are only a small component.
First, there are a number of other variables that are involved in achievement aside from the Power of the Mind.
Good genes helped Ben Franklin to a high IQ. Having genius. Good genes never hurt… but they are absolutely no guarantee of achievement.
There are also problems the individual faces that are substantial that could preclude the Power of the Mind. Poor health for example. Handicaps don’t seem to be a handicap for a lot of people. A few come to mind immediately. Franklin D. Roosevelt (President), Stephen Hawking (Physicist) and Chicago Cubs announcer Ron Santo were/are all wheel chair bound and yet make enormous differences in every day life for many people. Handicaps are a handicap. Not a stop sign…
Being born in a free country is a virtual requirement for laying the foundation for using the power of the mind. It’s essentially a requirement for achievement in the 21st century. Of course most people born in free countries never pay attention to the fact that they have a gold mind, I mean gold mine… on top of their shoulders. That’s why immigrants coming to America are four times more likely to become millionaires than people born in the United States. People who want to accomplish something can still come to this country and live the real American Dream.
100 years ago, no American would have been threatened by “losing their job to China” because people didn’t think in terms of what they were given (a job) but what they made. Their business. How they served the public. That’s what made the United States the greatest nation on the planet…and now as laziness, entitlement and complacency enter, the best success stories are now the immigrants. They have no sense of entitlement to give them cause to ask for anything that they don’t earn.
Competition in 2004 is nothing compared to what it was 100 years ago. It is much easier to become wealthy today than it was a century ago.
Think: The average person in North Korea earns 1/10 of the average person in South Korea…15 miles away…
The Cuban who builds a raft to spend days on the ocean in shark infested waters to take a chance at entrance into the United States sees the reward as far greater than the risk.
Freedom is the fertile soil where the seeds of the mind can be planted and harvested.
When you refuse the notion that someone else will take care of you 30 years from now…that you will take care of yourself and help those who can’t help themselves your mind begins to shift. When you make a few core mind shifts you realize that you can have the spirit of the immigrant. I bet your ancestors were immigrants. Even my American Indian ancestors were immigrants coming from what is now Russia!
Here’s a thought reframe for you….For those of you who live here (or in similar societies that are more responsible like Australia or New Zealand for example) what would happen if you had to fight to STAY in the United States? What if you were obligated to show as much entrepreneurial spirit as our forefathers in order to stay in the United States or lose your place to someone who would produce more than they consumed…give more than given.
These are significant shifts in thinking and because they are not the law, for example, they won’t stick with most people. But if you treat your freedoms as gifts and persist in spite of your genes you are two steps ahead of the game.
But what about the mind?
Your brain and how you use it’s offspring…the mind…is the difference. For all intents and purposes, you decide whether you will aspire to greatness, live quietly, or live a life of quiet desperation.
And THAT is power.
Not only do you have the most powerful source of energy on the top of your shoulders, you have the CHOICE as to whether you will use it or not!
In almost all cases, when *you* want something you get it.
In almost all cases, when *you* need something, you get it.
In almost all cases, when *you* demand something, you get it.
The brain is not only a goal seeking device, it has capacity for unyielding perseverance toward the object of it’s desire. It is how you have evolved.
You are alive today because you have survived every brush with tragedy, every possible thing that could have gone wrong (and a great deal did go wrong!). You are here. Part of that is simple randomness and part of it is that you are flat superior in using your mind.
Those who choose to “work smart” and “think smart” will achieve far more than those who refuse to do the same. That’s another shift.
The choice comes moment by moment and is constantly paired with it’s opposing partner which runs on emotion, reaction and instinct. All things that cause survival for brief periods of time and typically cause the demise of the individual when relied upon for anything but instant survival “decisions.”
One great capacity of the mind is it’s power to out-think and maneuver against the ever present emotional “feelings.” Feelings are important. They are how we measure the quality of our life. But when a person feels “bad” and makes decisions based upon their feelings, they can only end up obese, addicted, and on the road to Hades…all with the good intention of feeling better. More about this in a minute.
The first true key of the power of the mind is understanding the difference between dealing with your feelings and making decisions.
Don’t you love a guy like Arnold Schwarzenegger? The guy comes from Austria. Can barely say “hello” when he arrives in the United States. (Sometimes I can barely understand hello today!!) All he has is his body (which is all we all have) and he takes it, molds and sculpts it, competes for trophies based upon his self sculpting then does something few do. He begins to think and dream about what he COULD and CAN do. He gets images in his head of being a movie star…and then he does it. He imagines being able to be a national leader and he does it. Far more than the body builder of Pumping Iron, he now runs the state of California…remarkably well…all attributable to the Power of the Mind. How many COUNTRIES have an economy bigger than the one Schwarzenegger runs?…Not many.
It all starts in the imagination.
Look at two women (this shouldn’t be that difficult to do…after Arnold…)
Anna Nicole Smith (real name Vicki Lynn Hogan…and for a while I wondered if this was a long lost sister…you’d have had to know my birth-Dad…) and Pamela Anderson. Both blessed with beauty and a great cosmetic surgeon… and both end up with two very different levels of success in their career. One follows her feelings to feel better, into overeating, drug abuse and alcohol misuse. The other overcomes the same feelings that come with the territory, and instead follows her thoughts of optimizing everything she has into being one of the most recognizable and likable humans on the planet. Genes: similar. Career Path: Same. What they started with. Zero. Freedom: Same.
Difference: Power of the Mind. You watch Smith and she has sadly deteriorated into the butt of a painful joke. Anderson? She has allowed people to have fun at her expense and has endeared the vast majority of the public to her. She’s ever present. She sponsors a Russian Gymnast to compete in the Olympics. She writes a novel. (no kidding it’s on the stands now and she can write!). She runs multiple multimillion dollar projects …but she was supposed to be a dumb blonde…oops.
I pulled for Smith to make it. She was so likable, so sensual. But she followed her feelings…. and feelings need satiation…now.
Napoleon Hill often wrote and said in seminars, “What the mind of man can conceive, and believe, he can achieve.” I remember when I was a kid from Chicago, (where Napoleon Hill lived), I often thought what those words meant in real life. I knew it wasn’t going to be true in all cases but I believed it to be as true as any words can be. This was no affirmation for me. I never thought in terms of “say it and it’s true” junkologic. But I knew that if you could dream “it”…”it” could be real. Edison, Ford, Roosevelt. The evidence was overwhelming.
Every time I looked at the TV or read a book when I was a kid, there was always more evidence that average people…or people with less than nothing, like an Elvis Presley, born in a smaller house by 1/2 than I was… and lived with fewer resources than we had (and THAT is impressive)…he became the greatest of all time. More records sold…by twice than the Beatles, three times Sinatra, four times Crosby. (All other hero’s…The Beatles having come from poor or poverty themselves…)
One attributable item: Conceive, Believe, Achieve.
That was the Power of the Mind.
If the kid could from Tupelo, Mississippi could achieve being the most recognized human on the planet because he wanted to…what about a kid born in Chicago, Illinois….
No requirement for being the most recognized on the planet. Too much pressure. Short lifespan likely. What about someone who simply takes what they have…. Their scrawny body and mind and turns on the power…
There was never a need for me to be Sam Walton or Bill Gates But to live a life where you could do anything you wanted to do was a different story. THAT was what I wanted to and that was where the Power of the Mind switch was flipped up. I started thinking about what that life would be like…everyday…and soon…the goal seeking mechanism went to work…as it had for Curie, McCartney, Franklin and many lesser known but highly successful people…
…to be continued.
