In my years of working with people to generate deep levels of personal change, one question has nagged at me: why do some people change quickly, while others stay deeply stuck? Why do some people change with smooth sailing, while some people appear to change at least for a little while, but then slip back into old patterns of behavior, emotion, thought and response?
You see, it is my belief that any change that is going to stick to the point where YOU CAN ACTUALLY SEE IT MANIFESTED IN YOUR BEHAVIOR IN THE REAL WORLD, has to be strong enough to deal with the environmental anchors you will go back to ONCE YOU LEAVE THE PERSONAL CHANGE WORK ENVIRONMENT and go back into THE REAL WORLD.
Old anchors aren’t just “mental” and “emotional”. They also have patterns of breathing, musculature, and, not to get to esoteric, energy flows. So simply doing “mental work” to release them MIGHT NOT BE ENOUGH.
Please understand; I’m not knocking “mental work” here. I’ve been practicing NLP and Hypnosis for years, usually with very good results.
But if you’re finding yourself still pretty stuck in certain areas of your life, even AFTER doing good mental work, I want to suggest(as only I can!) that adding in some of what I’m about to show you might really jump-start your brain and sending you roaring out into the highway of super-change and mega-progress!
So let me share a ritual with you I created to assist a student of mine who was having trouble manifesting a behavior that he had “mentally” rehearsed. He felt good while doing the rehearsal, and even, in the actual environment he wanted the change, KNEW what to do, but found he STILL could NOT move himself into taking action!
Here is what you can do:
First, find a quiet place where you can do this, uninterrupted. I like to walk down to the beach( I can draw in the sand, and that helps!)
A park or even your living room or bedroom will do.
Sit quietly and spend a few minutes just energizing yourself with breath.
Create a place in your mind where anything can be possible..where anything can be made real..where your intent, imagination and will are what creates what is real, and NOT your past.
In front of you, visualize a circle on the ground, maybe about 6 feet wide. Draw it on the ground if you can.
Get up and WALK AROUND THE CIRCLE, looking at it as you walk. Really imagine that circle as a place of unlimited possibility where ANYTHING can be made manifest and made real.
Now, take a giant step into the circle, imagining you are also taking all your limiting beliefs, emotions, patterns of behavior along with you.
Take a giant step back out of the circle, but as you do, imagine you are leaving all of your limiting beliefs, emotions, decisions, patterns IN THE CIRCLE.
Sit down outside the circle in a comfortable, cross-legged position.
Take a look at those patterns, limiting beliefs and emotions that are now separate from you. ACKNOWLEDGE THEM. Thank them for being there and for serving whatever purpose they have served for you.
Now, you are going to give them a command. You are going to command them to depart forever but as they do, they are going to leave behind, inside the circle, any useful information, lessons, learnings or resources that will assist you in being whom you want to be and going where you want to go. Get a sense of their agreement to this and then, in whatever way you notice, notice how the limiting beliefs etc etc depart. They may move upwards or vanish or shrink to nothing. You don’t have to visualize any of this. Relaxand just get a sense this is being completed.
When you get the sense that this is done, it is time for you to reclaim all these learnings. Get some kind of symbolic representation for all of these learnings, lessons and resources that will now SERVE you. It could be a sound, a word, a picture, anything.
Step into the circle, grab hold of this symbol and place it inside yourself with both hands, at your heart center. Now, step back out of the circle.
Now, we move to the next phase:
As you walk around the circle, begin to imagine all the new ways you’d like to be. All the characteristics, traits, behaviors, beliefs etc. You might get just very vague ideas or some very clear ones. It doesn’t matter. If you don’t see anything clearly at all, no problem. Just give the intent and get the sense that it is all happening for you, all the changes you could ever want, there, inside the circle. Keep walking and breathing deeply as you get the sense this is happening.
Once you get the sense it is completed, stop. Take a breath. Prepare to step inside the circle to test how it feels for you. Take a giant step and stand inside the middle, absorbing all of the new energy, beliefs, ways of thinking, behaviors, skills. If you can, allow yourself to see a symbol, hear a sound or word, or get an overall feeling that symbolizes having all of this. Place this in the center of yourself, near your heart center, with both hands and breathe in. Allow this to merge with the symbol or sound of the resourceful learnings and lessons from your past.
Next: step outside the circle carrying all of this with you.
Because now, we are going to make it real in your body.
Walk around with all of this. Walk fast. Walk slow. Then run for a bit with all of this still with you. Lay down on your back with all of this, breathing it in. Then lay on your stomach with all of it. Get to your feet. Stand tall with all of this. Bend down with all of this. Yell out loud with all of this, yell anything. Talk quietly with this. TALK LOUDLY. Whisper with it. Laugh with it. If you can, cry with it. Hop on one foot with it. Then the other. Hop with both feet. Go through the actions of opening and closing doors with it(use a real door if one is around). Mime the common actions of picking up a phone. Washing your hands. Driving a car. GET YOUR BODY TO DO ANY AND ALL POSSIBLE ACTIONS YOU CAN THINK OF WITH THIS.
Think of every possible combination of typical postures and physiologies that you use in your waking life.
When you are done, laugh a bit. Return to the outside of the circle. Step in to the center. Sit down, comfortably. Absorb the good, cool changes. Feel good that it has already been. Welcome new learning by opening your arms wide and even with a smile accept the occasional backsliding, knowing you will get it. Commit yourself to continue to look for further and even better role models for change. Then laugh, and let it be.
Step out of your circle. Erase it if you have physically drawn it. Laugh with gratitude and as you think of your symbols one last time in the center of who you are, take a breath and say out loud, “This working is now completed. I release any and all expectations of result!”
Throw up your hands in a gesture of tossing confetti and laugh out loud. Go reward yourself with something simple; a favorite drink, treat, pet your cat, go call a good friend, anything.
Some things to note:
It is VERY important, even CRITICAL, that you do the physical movements described in this ritual. Simply doing it “in your head” will negate the power of it. The whole point is to link and wire in the changes to physical movement, posture and positions that are as common, and even more so, than the old anchors that USED to trigger the old limiting behaviors and responses. You are OWNING the changes IN YOUR BODY!
Note also we use symbology to unify the old learnings with the new ways of being, thinking and responding. We don’t ever want to delete information and learning; we want to integrate it into new ways of being that are CHOSEN through our will, intent and awareness.
